You don’t see many Role Playing games on the PSP. Namco Bandai and Nihon Falcom Corp have brought ‘The Legend of the Heroes III: Song of the Ocean’ into the Portable world with its launch on the Sony PlayStation Portable.
Legend of Heroes III tweaks some of the mistakes made in the first two titles, making it the best game in the series. This game follows a separate story, set in the same world as the previous titles. The game takes place in Weltluna, once home of the powerful ancients, the Water Tribe.
The tribe used songs to cast spells on enemies, their greatest achievement being a 24- verse masterpiece. The Water Tribe vanished, and took their secret along with them. Now, a legendary magician has resurrected these lost verses to form the water melody. Afraid of its combined power, he scattered the verses throughout Weltluna, etching each one on a stone.
You take the role of Forte, a young musician, who plays music with best friend Una and accomplished grandfather McBain. The three stumble upon one of the lost verses and a map leading to the rest. Eager to revive this melody, they set out to gather the pieces.
The RPG game provides nearly 50 hours of gameplay, with the player traveling across towns and villages in search of the stone tablets, and performing various sub tasks on the way, such as helping out citizens, saving lost children, or fighting threats to the town.
There are some bonus areas called scenes as well, which allows the player to access various skills and techniques from the previous two titles, as well as gain more battle experience.
The battle system has also been modified a bit. One difference is that characters gain skills as they level up, but won’t have access to some magic spells unless they have equipped the magic stones.
Legend of Heroes III is by far the best title in the series. Though it is a standalone title, it still has various recognizable elements from the previous titles, and it offers a refreshing change to PSP gamers, from the standard Namco Bandai action games like Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2. Legend of Heroes III is a great game, but it still has its downs. It could have been improved in many areas, but for fans of the series, this game will blow you away.
