This game was released for the PSP in the month of October. This game developed by EA Canada, is similar to the console version with extremely user friendly controls. You can control your weapons effectively with the help of four simple controls. In other words, you can attack, throw, jump and block. Variety and spice is added with the modifier features including Super power and Mobility.
A few strategic adjustments also enhance the game play as compared to the earlier console version. The card collection feature is impressive. There are a total of 170 cards. These can be chosen in random and digital directional pads are assigned with these by the hot keys. As you battle along, these cards can be used. They are especially useful as you battle against a player who is human.
There is only one analogue stick. Camera is effectively centered with the help of the block button. The fighting ladder is suitably altered to one-to-one basis and is a much better option than the traditional ones. Card collecting plus this approach along with Captain America and Dr. Doom, the two exclusive PSP characters, this game provides for a lot of fun and excitement for players. Marvel Nemesis is in fact the most ideal for PSP.
Rise of the Imperfects is however not absolutely perfect. There are certain minor issues. There is no variety and the game play feels quite repetitive. However, the characters in Nemesis - Rise of the Imperfects, including the villains, are quite interesting. Variety is provided in the form of three to four characters with the option of different costumes. If you play without using the cards, the game becomes more challenging. So if you are looking to finish off easily, then use the cards.
Character unlocking could have been handled better. It becomes quite cumbersome locating new combatants. You have to beat opponents over and over again in order to unlock characters. However, most of the features are interesting. Unlocking characters is actually fun. So, for an enthusiastic player, this game provides a lot of fun and entertainment for your favourite PSP.
Electronic Arts should have also done better with how it handles character unlocking. For a game that’s as simple and straightforward as this, it makes finding new combatants to mess around with a real chore. Sure, you’ll begin with The Thing of Fantastic Four fame and the newly-created Johnny Ohm, but that’s it. Most of the remaining 16 fighters all have to be uncovered by systematically going through and beating opponents again and again and again. This can make two-player games, which is the guaranteed highlight of the experience, even more repetitious in the early going. Plan to spend a lot of time unlocking folks if you want to have any fun with it.
At least the decision to include Terry Dodson instead of Jae Lee as the character designer for the project was a good one. The handheld iteration of Rise of the Imperfects looks much more like a comic book than its bigger counterpart, and it works really well on PSP. It’s just too bad that the storyline (which was actually pretty intriguing on consoles) gets lost in the shuffle with the god-awful intro paragraphs that accompany each fight.
Closing Comments
To its credit, the PSP version of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects does a better job of catering to its audience than the console versions did. This style of gameplay is definitely better in small doses, and when playing against another person it can actually be fun if you don’t have anything else to play. On the other hand, the fighting mechanics get repetitive very quickly and the AI is a total idiot. As a single-player game, there’s sadly not much to the experience beyond that.
