Here’s some news – PSP is still a big name in Japan and is really raking in the cash, if the recently reported numbers are anything to go by. No one expected the PSP to be as much of a hit as it is now. It might be surprising to note that the Sony PS3 on the other hand isn’t doing nearly as well as the PSP.
For the record, PSP units sold more than even the hugely popular DS lite.
Stating verbatim from the psp.ign.com
“The PSP continues to dominate hardware over in Japan. For the week covering April 14 to April 20, Media Create’s sales charts put Sony’s portable at 85,421 units, besting the DS Lite’s 44,551 units and the Wii’s 44,241 units.
It wasn’t all good news for Sony, though. The PS3 fell yet again, down to 7,438 units for the week. The PS2 dropped down to 6,545 units, with the Xbox 360 completing Team Low Sales with 1,076 units.
The PSP’s success is, of course, attributed to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold an additional 123,855 units over the week. Capcom has already shipped two million units for the title, which will likely soon overtake its predecessor, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, in overall sales.”
So is the success of PSP attributed to the success of Monster Hunter in any way? You bet it is. The numbers the PSP and other gaming devices are selling at is a testimony to the fact that games have been hugely popular among teenagers. An entire industry thrives on this. The success of Xbox, PS1, 2 and 3 is always attributed to the popularity of their games. Games are not reality; games depict violence and games are often said to be the release for all kinds of perverse desires people seem to have; does the increase in games mean that more and more people are craving for the unrealistic release?
