Hudson Soft is a publishing company based in Japan which specializes in electronic entertainment and is a known name among PSP owners. 18 May 1973 was the day when the company opened shop and operations began. Initially their dealings were limited to products related to computers but gradually over the years the company has moved onto the publishing of video games and development of mobile content. As of now, the company is controlled by the Japanese Game developing behemoth, Konami Entertainment.
The foundation of the company was first laid in Japan in the year 1973 by Yuji Kudo and Hiroshi Kudo who were real-life siblings. Both of them were enamored by trains and thus named the company after the famous Hudson Locomotive. They started a shop by selling art pictures and devices related to telecommunications. A couple of years down the line, they expanded the business by selling products dealing with personal computers and eventually ventured into the development of computer games.
They tied up with Nintendo and started developing games for them and then came Lode Runner, which was such a big hit that it sold more than a million copies in the game market in 1984. The fairytale success continued with the launch of Bomberman, which has even made its way to the PSP in the form of Bomberman Land (PSP). Other hit games by the publishers include the Mario party series.
The C62 system was developed in 1987 by Hudson which led them to collaborate with Nippon Electric Corporation, and thus the development of the PC engine game console which would prove to be a monstrous hit among gamers. In the later part of 2000, Hudson decided to go public as they were listed on the NASDAQ Japan stock exchange, thus propelling their popularity. Konami saw 5this as a good business venture and bought shares in bulk which made them the largest shareholder of the company leading to a virtual takeover.
Slowly Hudson has also ventured into the North American gaming market, establishing offices in many parts of North America thus globalizing the brand. They still continue to develop and manufacture video games and have constantly churned out hits over the years.
