This is another edition in the Sonic Sega saga of which we are all aware. If you are looking for some kind of interesting and novel stuff from Sonic, then you will be disheartened and dismayed. The series has failed to overcome its sequence of producing shoddy sequels and unimaginative stuff.
The game features eight characters divided into four teams. You can choose the team you want to race and which characters you’ll follow, in order to determine what story scenes you’ll see. To become a winner in Sonic Rivals 2 you have to get through six levels. The boss who appears in the final stage is your ultimate rival. The race in essence decides who will face the boss.
Obviously the game’s emphasis is placed on speed and beating your rival to the finish line. You are endowed with a wide range of accessories for besting your opponent. The game is challenging enough and you have to memorize the layout of the levels. It is important because your speed makes it difficult to preplan for objects that appear only moments earlier before you encounter them. You have to defeat your rivals, including the boss, in one-on-one combat. The boss is finally destroyed when you strike it ten times, irrespective of the number of times it is hit by your opponent.
The graphic and presentation of the game is pretty decent, and its music perfectly complements the action that is going on. The characters also have voices that gel well with their onscreen characters. These qualities not withstanding, there are many flaws that really cast a damper on what we all wish would have been a great game. On many occasions you will find opponents aimlessly moving around and making the least bit of effort to save themselves. Then again, the game’s control is overtly sensitive, which makes it difficult to make subtle movements. It really becomes a hindrance when dealing with say, the boss. The air-attack stunts also lack the required precision. Another factor that goes against the game is its having very few levels. You will end up mastering the levels sooner than later, making it too old and stale to attract you any more.
