Even laymen can tell confidently to guess which genre the game “The Golden Compass” belongs to. That’s the beauty of this heart shaking action packed thriller title, it’s very straightforward and doesn’t mince words. You might not have guessed it, but the Golden Compass is actually based on a movie, which itself was based on fantasy novel. Typically games based on movies are lacking, incomplete and generally just bad, but let’s see if the Golden Compass is an exception.
In the game you’ll play as the protagonist “Lyra Belacqua” who seeks to save Roger from the grasp of the Gobblers (evil folkloric kidnappers). Accompanying Lyra is her soul’s embodiment the daemon Pantalaimon, whose nick name is Pan. Occasionally she is joined by an armored Polar bear named Lorek. Obviously you can tell that The Golden Compass (PSP) is an unusual fantasy title. Adding more spice to the title is an instrument known as the Alethiometer which Lyra possesses. The instrument is actually the golden compass for which the game is named, and this handy contraption can answer any question Lyra asks. Some short clips of the Golden Compass movie are even included in this game. So I guess to same time on the development, they just decided to import scenes from the movie.
The gameplay itself is pretty interesting. The most exciting level is Gyptian vessel. Here the player gets to explore different locations and manages to do some busywork in an insanely long sequence. One of these tasks includes mopping the deck, which is more fun than it sounds. Other stages may have you throwing snowballs, or adjusting people’s furniture. As Lyra you can use Pan as a grapping hook and latch onto the poles. It’s pretty similar to Prince of Persia.
While playing as Lorek you’ll paw through three types of foes like witches, Tartas and Wolves. The set of minigames included in the title gives you more exciting gameplay options. You’ll get to go through these minigames when Lyra tries to deceiver other characters. If you are looking for something different, and enjoyed the book or movie, then maybe you can try to save Roger from the Gobblers yourself.
