There have been many popular Star Trek games, but the famous science fiction series still hadn’t made its way to the PSP. This all changed with the release of Star Trek: Tactical Assault for our favourite PlayStation Portable handheld console. Many Star trek titles were typically strategy oriented titles but Tactical Assault has breached that mentality. In this game you play as a starship captain and take charge of ship, eventually working your way to better, more powerful and more advanced ships.

At the beginning the level designs feels fresh, but as progress the game boils down to basic maneuvers and steady combats. You play in an intergalactic arena where you’ll encounter Klingons and Romulans, and all your other favourite Star Trek characters. Tactical Assault is pretty similar to Starfleet Command in a stripped down version.

As a gamer you’ll play as a starship captain, who has to consider multiple systems and how they work, before even engaging in battle. Your ship is encircled by arcs which actually represent your shield. When your opponent whistles away at your shield, you can easily avoid the damage by just rotating the ship. Being in a battle you can target your enemy’s vulnerable openings but its actually not worthy. Your ship can include different kinds of weapons and your enemy must be within firing range, which can change depending on the weapon. However, you cannot fire at your foes continuously since the weapons need to periodically be recharged.

As you progress in the game you’ll receive upgraded ships with more layers of shields and distinct weapon placements. If you want to increase the ship’s moving speed, or weapons power in Star Trek: Tactical Assault, then you can use accumulated points. The right shoulder button can make your action more effective, but it needs to be compensated from your energy bar. While the combat might seem somewhat complicated it is actually quite enjoyable and easy to learn. The graphics and music are also of a high quality. Star Trek fans will not be the only ones pleased with this fairly impressive and fun game.
