With surplus of fun, flamboyant style, bright scene, vibrant background and mind bending gameplay, Ultimate Block Party is here to rock the party on our beloved Play Station Portable. The title already unveils the game’s genre as a puzzle focused title. All Tetris fans can rejoice, as the Ultimate Block Party is actually the first Tetris like puzzle title for the PSP.
Of course, this game offers far more than traditional Tetris, and can really be considered a super souped up version of the iconic arcade classic which millions have to adore and appreciate. Tetris DS is a major hit on the Nintendo DS Lite, so the PSP obviously deserves its own version. But unlike other versions, this PSP title focuses on competitive battle, rather than solitary point chases. Furthermore these competitive battles can heat up quickly, turning into fast and intense matches.
While many consider Tetris a fairly linear and simple game, Ultimate Blocks adds a few surprises. You will be put in front of a screen which is filled with colorful blocks about a third of the way. As Every so often, from the bottom a new row of the blocks pushes up and you lose when it touches the screen top. With time the blocks start dropping down a lot faster, as your heart beat gets correspondingly quicker. Your goal as always remains to diminish the level of blocks by putting identically colored blocks together in a line, either vertically or horizontally. This is made possible with the movement of the 2 by 2 cursor around and spinning spinning the highlighted ones in either direction until the match up.
Even more excitement and adventure awaits you once you’re through the basic four block strategy. You’ll find there are many other exciting gameplay modes to choose as well. The visual style is quite obviously Japanese but still very appealing. Apart from the visuals, the sound is basically on the level expected of puzzle oriented titles. If you are a Tetris addict, then this handheld version should definitely be considered a must-have.
