Who’s your favorite spy? I’m sure it must be the Scottish secret agent who introduces himself as “Bond, James Bond”. There’s hardly anyone who has yet to hear of the super spy, aka agent 007. Of course, this fiery and unforgettable character has not only fired up the movie world, but also the gaming world for many years with hits like Golden Eye or the latest Bond PSP game, From Russia with Love.
The title from Russia with Love is basically a third person shooting game released by EA. The title undoubtedly delivers that visceral thrill which is expected from a James Bond oriented title or flick. As a movie turned title, its plot revolves around and is based on the movie of the same name. In the movie the spy lands in Istanbul to meet a beautiful woman Russian defector who’s keen to turn over Lektor (a Russian cipher machine) to M16, in exchange for meeting Bond, the love of her life. Of course, the whole thing is actually a trap and setup constructed by SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion).
The plot was quite loose in the beginning but later it comes perfectly on track. All the story details and similarities with the movie are noticeable in the title, although some scenarios are rewritten to fit with the film better. Some of these huge climatic sequences in From Russia with Love (PSP) are actually quite spectacular, such as the confrontation on the train. Unlike the movie, it doesn’t portray the sequence where Bond is ducking and dodging a low-flying helicopter that’s trying to kill him. The title involves some other detailed amendments such as renaming SPECTRE to Octopus and the first & the last level have basically no connection to the film.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a James Bond title without unique gadgets and weapons. Bond is given a variety of innovative weapons, including a few nifty ones like the Q-copter, a miniature helicopter that provides Bond with surveillance of hard-to-reach areas and acts as a weapon (in that it will explode on command). So the game is packed with all the action and excitement we can expect from a Bond title and is available now for the PSP.
