PSP owners now have the tremendous opportunity to experience spiritual and faithful arcade action. This is possible with the arcade After Burn: Black Falcon, even though it obviously lacks the presence of imposing and large traditional arcade machines. But even though you will only be piloting the fighter jets in After Burn: Black Falcon on your tiny handheld PSP, the game still offers that same exciting arcade experience.
Let’s now talk about the game’s plot and gameplay which actually revolves around 13 prototype jets that have been stolen by a rogue mercenary group from a secret research facility in Nevada. You’ll play as a member of the Joint Task Force Scramble Team and it’s your responsibility to prevent the mercs from succeeding by either recovering or destroying the stolen jets. To accomplish this task you can select from three humorously archetypal pilots, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You’ll get to watch their impressive profile in a dramatic and cinematic sequence at the beginning which is actually quite entertaining.
The actual gameplay involves various levels that are quite short in length and only last approximately 7 minutes. Despite the levels’ short duration, you will find these seven minutes full of non-stop challenging action that is even hard on the normal difficulty level. Each mission contains a specific objective like taking down a psychotic foe pilot or a hospital ship with baby bunnies. The best part of After Burner - Black Falcon (PSP) is its consistent and never ending in game action. However, as the successor to the original After Burner, one would hope for less glitches in the gameplay, although the never actually stop the game from being fun.
All the jets in the game have superior flying abilities, with high top speeds, maneuverability and payload ratings, together with a large selection of unique weapons. These weapons include missiles for ground targets, rockets for air targets, unlimited machine guns for close range targets and more. The lock on targeting is used by both missiles and rockets, while the targets themselves are actually colour coded. So anyone who wants to unleash their inner fighter pilot will probably enjoy this game, despite some minor glitches.
