An extremely comprehensive game for the NHRA fan on a budget is what the Countdown to Championship is all about. The sport of drag racing is represented in a realistic and authentic manner.

If you are new to drag racing, you may have difficulty in understanding this game initially. It is not a simple racing where you press wildly at the accelerator trying to come ahead in a race with other cars.

This game is all about just two cars racing for a period of four to five seconds in a straight line. The new versions have added rocket cars and motorcycles to add an element of interest. Though it may sound very simple, it is not so. There are various challenges you face as you race to the finish line.

Race features five parts namely burnout, racing, replay, staging and tuning. As you start your game, you carefully note the weather conditions which include surface and air temperatures, cloud cover, humidity level, etc. You then need to tune your car according to these conditions in mind. You have to remember that your traction is affected by the surface temperature and your horsepower is affected by the air temperature.

Planning thus is an important aspect in this game. This includes a whole lot of aspects such as overdrive, compression, tire pressure, wings, front ballast, fuel flow, primary and secondary clutch, spark of the engine, etc. At the lower levels of the game, you can opt out of planning and tuning by selecting the auto tuning option. Difficulty levels also provide you with different tuning time.

As you enter the field, you encounter various stages like the “burnout” which is actually enhancing your traction by spinning your wet tyres, the “racing” stage where you fine tune your reflex and tuning abilities, the “staging” which is lining your car in a careful manner, etc. If things go wrong, you have the option of replaying your actions with the help of at least fourteen different cameras.

Various vehicle classes you play with include the Pro Stock, Jet-Powered, Funny Car, Motorcycle, etc. There are various modes as well including the basic Countdown to Championship, career modes, etc.
