Dynasty Warriors is one of those gaming series that never die. New games come out as you get older, and it’s always a pleasure to play. Now venturing into the PlayStation Portable, the Dynasty Warriors Volume 2 provides some improvements over its predecessors to bring the fans some fine gaming.
As expected, the PSP version is a smaller, cut down version of the console version. The console versions of Dynasty Warrior had such large levels that took a long time to complete even on horseback, providing great levels of detail during those epic battles that take place. Well, considering the hardware limitations, the PSP version has been cut down into a board game style of playing, with missions becoming smaller and fights in mini arenas with just a few hundred enemies.
Killing everyone isn’t the point here, as the clock is still ticking, and finishing faster is better. So advancing from one section really relies not on killing everyone there, but rather on finishing key goals quickly, like taking out the leader of the enemies, or just demoralizing the opposing army. Battles range from a minute or two for small ones, and up to six for large ones.
Battles against the scrubs of the army can get boring and repetitive, as most soldiers don’t even fight back, and just wait to be taken out. The battles against leaders and officers, however, are more spaced out, putting those combos to good use.
Other notable changes from the old game are that you can now pick our horse, but that isn’t much of a deal right? Morale is given more importance, which can really speed up battles, by demoralizing soldiers by taking out their leaders or officers.
Dynasty Warriors Volume 2 lives up to the expectations of the fans to some extent. Though there are some areas in which Dynasty Warriors 2 lags behind, it’s still a good improvement over the previous title. It’s basically a great hack ‘n slash for those looking to just kill some mindless pawns. The game will definitely keep you occupied for a lot of time, but without much variety.
