Over the Hedge: Hammy goes Nuts

Posted on Dec 12, 2008 06:30:51 PM

Over the Hedge is a great comic strip and an even better movie. In 2006, Activision published a game based on the movie. It was a 3D action game, of sorts. Following the storyline of the original movie and comic strip, the main characters, RJ, Verne and Hammy, along with some of their friends, try to cope with the urbanization of their habitats, and the invasion of people into their forest.

The original game was released for the GameCube, PS2, Xbox, GameBoy Advance and the PC. After that, there were no other games based on the popular comic… until now. Activision is back now to bring to the PSP an original Over the Hedge game, Over The Hedge - Hammy goes Nuts. The game is in development for just handheld consoles this time, targeted at the Gameboy Advance, the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS.

The game revolves around the three main characters of Over The Hedge, Hammy, Verne and RJ, following the story of the three traveling back into the suburbs to get back what is rightfully Hammy’s… his lost Cable TV connection.

Each version of the game, on each different console, is developed with exclusive content, making each version console specific.

Hammy Goes Nuts features a more puzzle- based gameplay system. Basically, the game is about running around and collecting items to add to other items to repair Hammy’s Cable TV. Though not for the hardcore mature gamers, the younger generation of gamers will enjoy this title, as it puts their brains to work in an extremely fun way.

You take on the role of Hammy, and can get the help of Verne, Stella and RJ through the game, to complete tasks to get your cable back.

Levels involve finding keys to gain access to doors, which essentially take you to the next level. Puzzles in the game may be a bit easier than expected, but the younger gamers will have a great time solving them and progressing through the game.

The game is great for young gamers, with some entertaining puzzles and familiar characters from the Over The Hedge universe. It has some nice sound effects, and is overall a good game for those looking to just have some fun.

Hot Wheels Ultimate Racing for the PSP

Posted on Nov 11, 2008 03:38:49 PM

Hot wheels have consistently been all time favorites. These metal cars provide children with fun and excitement as they race around trying to smash them against each other. Along these lines, the hot wheels ultimate racing is a game which has capitalized on this brand.

A total of twenty six cars are featured in this brand which look distinctly like the hot wheels. These include the dragsters which are shaped like bullets and the wider futuristic cars.

As a player you have the exciting option of customizing your car’s the way you want them to be. You can change features like decals, color of the window tint, the neon under glow, etc. As you go around winning races, you get to collect performance upgrades such as higher acceleration, new tires and precise handling.

This game is not all simple and easy. If you are looking for some unforgiving and challenging moments, pick up this game. There are instances in Hot Wheels: Ultimate Racing where you find yourself coming last in the race in spite of leading in the first two laps. You have to be deft and memorize the courses to improve efficiency.

There are a few flaws which have to be overlooked if you are looking to enjoy the game. The controls are not so fluid with the ineffective handbrake and bad responsiveness. This often results in you crashing headlong into a wall. However, as you continue playing this exciting game, you tend to work around the flaws as the more positive aspects of the game keep you entertained.

As you play along, you learn how to expertly handle functions like R2 which slows time and R1 which boosts. With the help of R2, you can slow down and expertly negotiate corners. You have to be quick and responsive in using this control as you are about to crash into a wall or mess up your jump.

There are eleven tracks closely resembling the original Hot Wheel tracks. Enemies and traps on these tracks add excitement and fun. Hot Wheels fans can enjoy hours of fun from this budget game on their favorite PSP.

Undead Knights: The Action Is Still Alive

Posted on Oct 15, 2008 12:46:08 PM

The PSP has always been a great platform for offering action games to entertain its users. Undead Knights is one of those amazing action adventures, which provides a complete dose of entertainment to gamers who love to smash their enemies. The game is being published by Sony Computer Entertainment and is slated for a 2009 release.

The game focuses on making your enemies fight for you by turning them into zombies. As a player goes on rotating through foes, from enemies to subordinates, he will also gain the power to control them. The players can have power over these so called zombies through certain commands like throw and charge. If you want them to enter castles, you can simply create a zombie ladder to make your task easier. However, that is just a part of the thrill, as there are many other things that will amuse you and set this game apart from standard horror games.

Another worthy feature of the game is its multiplayer option, which allows up to four people to play together simultaneously. So you can expect a great war, with your own enemies fighting for you. Even the developer Tecmo has a lot of expectations from the game as they call it “a new-style invasion action game”. This probably points out towards the inventive plot and the exploratory gameplay. Although Tecmo is not really revealing many details about the story, what they have revealed is interesting enough for us to get excited.

It will be enjoyable and challenging for players to use their dead enemies for their own purposes as their pawns. It sounds quite interesting to be infused with the special powers that can completely reverse the role of a dead rival. While there are plenty of Zombie games to go around, such as Resident Evil 4, not too many allow you to build you’re own zombie army from your slain opponents. Well! If you feel that this point is overemphasized, I must tell you that it is actually the most exciting part that makes the Undead Knights unique, and hopefully a great PSP game.

Gundam vs. Gundam at the TGS 2008

Posted on Oct 15, 2008 11:50:55 AM

If you think that robots are meant to threaten humans, then Gundam vs. Gundam presented at the TGS 2008 will widen your horizon. The Gundam series begin in the 1970s and has since gained much popularity among action lovers, especially in Japan. As you might have guessed from the name, Gundam vs. Gundam is built around a theme of clashing robots. Namco Bandai has served up a fresh concept of a hard struggle between the Gundams, which offers an appropriate amount of thrilling excitement.

As a giant robot, the players will engage in combat against the long stream of enemies, who are also Gundams. To begin with, you must pick-up a Gundam suit from the wide range available and then jump in the battlefield. Your enemies are really powerful, so you need more power to defeat them and prove that you are the real Gundam. The players who are already familiar with Gundam games will comprehend the series the best and easily get into the action. While other successful Gundam games, like Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, are reserved the next generation consoles, PSP owners are lucky to have this version coming with the PSP-3000 pack. The most interesting part here is the special Gundam theme that is imprinted on the PSP’s back if you opt for the PSP Gundam package. This is a real sign of the Gundam craze in Japan.

The action-filled adventure is designed in such a way that you won’t be able to take your eyes of the screen. Just after you defeat an enemy, you will be attacked by another one. So you must adequately familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of managing the Gundams or you will loose your scores. You must also make full use of the extraordinary abilities that you have as a Gundam to dominate your opponents. As soon as you realize that an enemy is firing, come in action and show him that you are a real hero.

If you are a Gundam fan, you will obviously love to direct the brawl, but even if it is your first game, you will surely have fun. The only important thing is you must familiarize yourself with the special moves in order to succeed.

From Russia with Love to the PSP

Posted on Oct 14, 2008 02:02:18 PM

Who’s your favorite spy? I’m sure it must be the Scottish secret agent who introduces himself as “Bond, James Bond”. There’s hardly anyone who has yet to hear of the super spy, aka agent 007. Of course, this fiery and unforgettable character has not only fired up the movie world, but also the gaming world for many years with hits like Golden Eye or the latest Bond PSP game, From Russia with Love.

The title from Russia with Love is basically a third person shooting game released by EA. The title undoubtedly delivers that visceral thrill which is expected from a James Bond oriented title or flick. As a movie turned title, its plot revolves around and is based on the movie of the same name. In the movie the spy lands in Istanbul to meet a beautiful woman Russian defector who’s keen to turn over Lektor (a Russian cipher machine) to M16, in exchange for meeting Bond, the love of her life. Of course, the whole thing is actually a trap and setup constructed by SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, and Extortion).

The plot was quite loose in the beginning but later it comes perfectly on track. All the story details and similarities with the movie are noticeable in the title, although some scenarios are rewritten to fit with the film better. Some of these huge climatic sequences in From Russia with Love (PSP) are actually quite spectacular, such as the confrontation on the train. Unlike the movie, it doesn’t portray the sequence where Bond is ducking and dodging a low-flying helicopter that’s trying to kill him. The title involves some other detailed amendments such as renaming SPECTRE to Octopus and the first & the last level have basically no connection to the film.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a James Bond title without unique gadgets and weapons. Bond is given a variety of innovative weapons, including a few nifty ones like the Q-copter, a miniature helicopter that provides Bond with surveillance of hard-to-reach areas and acts as a weapon (in that it will explode on command). So the game is packed with all the action and excitement we can expect from a Bond title and is available now for the PSP.

Maximillan with his Bounty Hounds on the PSP

Posted on Oct 6, 2008 01:39:38 PM

For you PSP gamers out there, Namco Bandai Games unleashed a product with a great sense of style. This new sensation is entitled Bounty Hounds, and is filled with some super stylized and pulsating features.

Bounty Hounds is focused on simple hack and slash action. Unfortunately, the game’s simplicity is not really an advantage, as it gets monotonous and unexciting after a while. The best description of the game would be something along the lines of Dynasty Warriors 6, but set in Space with a shorter storyline and less gameplay. The player assumes the role of Maximillian who leads a group of mercenaries known as Bounty Hounds. Since the game is set in the future, you will see humanity at odds with aliens and all sorts of factions as each attempt to colonize the universe. The title clarifies your job profile, where you are expected to kill aliens, explore hostile planets, rescue human survivors and help human progress flourish. Of course, you are not doing this out of altruism, and as a mercenary you will naturally get paid for your duties.

What makes the gameplay more interesting, is the fact that you’ll encounter continually encounter numerous foes and aliens, that keep you involved in the game. The bosses in the title also provide a nice surprise and held test your endurance. The modicum of depth found in the game originates from the character customization system. Maximillan is compatible with up to four weapons, but can only wield two at a time. For example, you can equip a bazooka in your left hand and an axe in your right, a sword in your left and a hammer in your right, or maybe a fancy shotgun in your right hand and a laser rifle in your left. With over 500 items, there are plenty of creative possibilities.

The graphics and sound are all up to par, and quite good. Ultimately this is a nice title for any futuristic action fans, who would like to hold a hammer in one hand, and a bazooka in the other, while battling vicious aliens.

Star Ocean: First Departure is Interesting enough

Posted on Sep 29, 2008 12:36:15 PM

Star Ocean: First Departure is an interesting game where you are assigned the responsibility of protecting a small town on the planet Roak. The game surrounds three friends, Roddick Farrence, Millie Chliette, and Dorne Murtough who are shown patrolling the small town of Kratus in the opening sequence set in space. The game literally takes off when a group of bandits invade the town and you have to guide the trio in fending off the culprits. What keeps you engaged in this adventure is that it does not reveal too much of the plot in the beginning; thereby keeping you engrossed in the story throughout the game. Since you never know what will happen next, the game is really a test of your resourcefulness and ingenuity.

Combat is relatively quick, usually barely lasting longer than a minute, and occurs in real-time. The fact that battles are fought randomly in 3D battlefields also adds to the overall gameplay and excitement. The combat in the PSP version is very similar to the Star Ocean - Till the End of Time (PS2) PlayStation 2 title. It is, however, interesting to note that you can have full control over only one character with the option of switching to any character in your party during combat. You can unleash powerful attacks on the enemy by earning special abilities through the L and R buttons. Moreover, when not in combat mood, you can plan your party’s strategy using the menu, adding even more depth to the game. It allows you to take an aggressive, or defensive, or a spread out posture, depending on what the situation warrants.

While you are exploring and defending the town there is a map that constantly guides you through its different parts. But you have to do without it while crawling through the dungeons. This is actually somewhat of a benefit though, since it forces you to explore more.
