The latest addition to the well-known Tenchu series the ‘Time of Assassins’ puts together the finest elements of this classic game in a re-mastered version. In this version published by Sega the graphics and detailing have been enhanced and new features have been incorporated to engage you in long hours of stealthily ending your enemies.
This version has a more in-depth story and brings back the characters Rikimaru, Ayame, Rin, and Tessyu. As usual the game involves spying on enemies and killing them while they are unaware. Stealth maneuvers form the primary element of the Tenchu - Time of the Assassins PSP game. Icons on the screen light up to show you when an enemy is aware of your presence. The combat requires a high level of skill and responsiveness. Each of these characters has a unique storyline and each story has brand new levels and missions. The fifth new character needs to be unlocked through completion of certain levels. The most significant development is the option of playing for the rival side as Onkiage, the evil servant of Lord Mei-oh. It also features 50 independent campaigns that can be played after successfully completing the single player mode. It has the famous scene editor that allows you to create your own levels with a variety of enemies to combat. The co-operative and multiplayer modes allow you to play with other players through a wireless LAN or a USB cable.
The game developers should have focused on the camera work that seems shoddy at times. Apart from the area where the actual mission takes place most of the environment is completely lackluster and could have definitely used more detailing. Nonetheless the stealth combat that propelled the game to success is definitely engrossing while the game editor that enables you to create your own scenes is an exciting feature. Move through the murky shadows in the dead of the night and silently lay your enemies to rest in this PlayStation Portable game.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins is an interesting game from the Tenchu series played from a third person perspective. Here, players play in the quiet shoes of two ninjas Ayame and Rikimaru. They serve their lord Gohda and carry out his not-so-straightforward orders. Going through dark environments and systematically eliminating guards, you carry out your Lord’s orders.
On the PSP, Tenchu is a straight forward reproduction of the Wii version. Here the only difference from the original Tenchu: Shadow Assassins Wii version is that the motion controls have been eliminated. As a player you either control Ayame or Rikimaru going through various missions allotted to you by your Lord Gohda. Apart from these story missions, you can also play the numerous short assignment missions. With these you have a chance to practice techniques and also learn how to break pace in the more complicated levels.
Controls are user friendly and standard with simple button presses. There is no need for any motion control here as the game is set on the roads. Left and right on the analog nub rotates the character and front and back moves them accordingly in that direction. For quick movement from one place to another, all you need to do is to press the L trigger and spring forward. Evasion is possible with the help of R trigger.
Tenchu: Shadow assassins come with a lot of bloodshed. Killings add a sense of excitement and thrill for the gamers. Story missions take you through feudal environments in Japan where you assassinate leaders. You navigate by rolling through bushes, sliding along walls and creeping under houses.
There is an element of frustration in the gameplay as you struggle through the first stages trying to get a grip on rolling techniques.
If you get caught once, your game is over. As a ninja, you can only dodge once and the second time gets you caught sending you back to the last checkpoint. Shadow Assassins is an exciting and wonderful game that has the potential to keep gamers hooked to their favourite PlayStation Portable for hours. Carry out your Lord’s missions or go on your own assignment missions and have endless hours of fun.
