Dave Mirra BMX Challenge on the PSP

Posted on Nov 24, 2008 11:21:19 AM

Dave Mirra has been missing from the video game scene for quite a while now. He was nowhere to be seen after his name was dropped off Acclaim’s BMX XXX. Well, Crave decided to bring him back with Dave Mirra BMX Challenge, which turned out to be one of their worst ideas yet.

If you’ve played Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam (which is quite a fun game actually), you’ll find that the two games are similar in terms of the game’s design except here, you aren’t skating. You’ll find that the career mode in Dave Mirra BMX Challenge is split up into two parts, basically just trick contests and Races. They progress individually even though they take place on the same level. This means you can race all you want without tricking even a little bit.

That’s all fine, but most of the game just gives you a headache. Tracks can get excessively confusing, with unnecessary objects placed in the way, and sometimes, you just don’t know where the darned finish line is. Control over your player is not the best either. You’ll find that if you aren’t really, really careful, you’ll end up flying off the sides, or hop off jumps.

The back of the box might say 17, but in reality it’s just 9 tracks in the game. You play 8 tracks on novice, then the same 8 tracks on pro, to unlock a final 9th track. The AI isn’t much of a challenge either. You can breeze through the game with absolutely no difficulty, except maybe for the confusing tracks. The game was easier that any other on the PSP, and to make matters worse, you have to finish only three out of four to move on with the game.

Trick Challenges are a little more testing as you progress, but only the last few courses can actually be called a challenge. In fact, they become a bit frustrating from time to time. The tracks aren’t exactly top notch, so tricking can be quite annoying.

It isn’t a really good game. It’s far from it. For the hardcore BMX and Dave Mirra fans however, this might be a good game to keep in your collections, but nothing more.

2 Xtreme is too Extreme for the PSP

Posted on Nov 6, 2008 04:25:43 PM

A variety of extreme sports are featured in extreme locations and events in this interesting and fascinating game, called 2Xtreme which was released in the year 1996. On the lines of Jet Moto, Rally Cross and Crash Bandicoot, the 2 Xtreme provides some interesting and exciting playing experience.

You can choose events and locations with the help of the menu system. You can also keep track of your performance as you take part in various events. You get to take part in events which take part in a variety of cities. This is exciting as you see a number of different things around in different cities. All places are characterized by winding and long courses similar to the one in Road Rash.

Fun and excitement characterize every race. If by chance, you collide into or run into an object, you do not have the option of toppling over. You are required to get up, steady yourself and get around the object by maneuvering sideways which is about the only thing you can do in this situation.

There are various methods with which you can save your energy. As you go around racing, being aware of saving your energy in order to not come to a standstill is an interesting and challenging option in the game. As you are kicking your skateboard or peddling your bike, you tend to lose a lot of energy and somewhere along the way, when all your energy is lost, you can no longer continue kicking.

Energy saving options includes couching down as you race downhill which will enable you to pick up speed as well as save on your energy. You need skill to identify the downhill course though as some of them are flat and some actually go steep downhill.

If you are fond of racing around and competing in events in interesting locales, then the 2 Xtreme is the game for you. Have endless hours of extreme racing excitement, entertainment and fun with this game on your favorite PSP. For those interested in sports and related events, this game provides the ultimate experience.

ATV Offroad Fury Pro: Snowmobile Madness for the PSP

Posted on Sep 19, 2008 03:49:54 PM

ATV Offroad Fury Pro is an awesome racing based game for the PSP fans, and especially so for PSP racing fans. This version is the successor to the old ATV Offroad, and is loaded with lots of new features, vehicles, gameplay modes, tracks and stunning visuals.

Developed by Climax Studios, and released by Sony Entertainment, this one lives up to the expectations of even the most demanding and critical gamer. Whether you are playing in the single player mode, or competing in a multiplayer battle, you will feel excited because of the variety of different ways you can make your opponent eat the dust.

Thanks to the improved AI and game control, which was rather awkward in the older version of this racing maniac, things have gotten better and more intense. ATV Offroad Fury Pro offers the player complete control over the vehicles. You will find it easy to handle the fast-paced four wheelers with the D pad on your PSP. This game offers different types of racing machines, which all go completely crazy as soon as you activate the acceleration. You will get ride bikes, buggies, trucks, snowmobiles and ATVs. There are also some additions with respect to the race types.

The concept in the new version is overall quite similar to the old version. You can earn money by performing well in the races and winning the cups. If you prove yourself as an extremely good racer, then you may attract some sponsors towards you, which naturally speeds up the cash inflow. This hard earned money can be utilized to upgrade your racing machines and further improve your performance.

Onto the technical aspects, where Offroad Fury Pro is very smooth. One noticeable improvement in this version is its visuals. The draw distance has been improved a lot. However, at times you may see some graphics getting distorted, with small windows popping in and out, but this isn’t ever a major distraction. The track designs are good and the surroundings are also created with utmost precision. The whole racing environment looks like a real life racing grid. The game sounds are also very realistic sounding and high quality. If you liked the first one, then you are guaranteed to like this one twice as much.
