Blokus Portable: Steambot Championship

Posted on Nov 20, 2008 02:57:37 PM

Games have been recognized throughout history as board games. Board games are the origin of today’s super sophistic, multi-billion dollar gaming industry. The success of board games is because of its easiness to understand. But board games could be more complex than any other high-end games of today. Games such as Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly would be the first to strike the mind when we think of board games. But this new kind called Blokus, a recently introduced board game, has gained a good reputation all over the world.

Irem Software Engineering is the creator of this game. This game has no particular sequence in the game, each player plays as a new guest every time with new puzzles all over. The player will enter an inn as a guest. The inn will already be occupied by many Blokus players from the universe of the Chronicles of Steambot.

The objective of the new player is to learn the game of Blokus and challenge the other players. It depends on the efficiency of the player to eventually become the Blokus Champion. The game is played on a flat square grid with multiple open squares. Each player places pieces on the board in his turn depending on the format of the game. On a four player game, you start at the corners and work your way across the playing field. However, you cannot place the pieces next to each other; they could only be connected at the corners. This increases the complexity of the game and storms the player’s mind. As the game progresses, the number of free space will also be cut down, making it much harder to place the remaining items.

The system of the game is quite shallow. By playing against more opponents, the players will earn illustrations and unlock their characters. After a couple of matches, the player will have enough credits to buy everything possible. The game has lot of substance and requires in-depth thinking. With all the perplexing grids, this game could be quite a challenge. Enjoy playing this interesting game on your favorite PSP.

Ultimate Board Game Collection Released, but we are a little Upset

Posted on May 20, 2008 06:04:35 AM

No, it has nothing to do with the game, really. It is about the release. Games are like trains — the schedules and release dates must always be made public information. With tools like the Internet and scores of websites available, we don’t see why any game maker would NOT want to use the power of ever pervasive media and promote games and mention the release dates.

Recently, it was known that the Ultimate Board Game Collection had been released but no one ever knew about it. A pity, given that almost every game that comes out today is already ‘previewed’ and then released followed by reviews that make or break the game’s success. This particular game didn’t savor the process. Rather, it sneaks up from behind and suddenly appears on shelves ready for purchase.

The game had also been released for the PS2 and Wii — that is beside the point, however. We are a little upset about the fact that it wasn’t known until recently and we do think it isn’t a very healthy business strategy on the part of the game developers and distributors. There is a very good likely hood the sales will take a beating.

The collection of the games, on the other hand, is impressive for the PSP with about 24 games included in it. The PSP and the Wii versions come with a much lower number of games bundled in.

The series of games also come with a cool feature where you can use the songs stored on your PSP for background music, and make jigsaw puzzles out of your photographs stored on your PSP.

According to IGN:

“The Ultimate Board Game Collection is made up of classic board and table games that gamers have enjoyed for years. Parcheesi, Naval Battle, Chinese Checkers, and more will keep entire families entertained for hours, and best of all, there are no little pieces or dice to lose. Many of the games, like Naval Battle, include animated sequences in which pieces move or, in this case, ships sink. Parents are often concerned about video games full of violence, but they can rest assured that the Ultimate Board Game Collection is full of good, clean family fun that everyone will enjoy”
