Rocky Balboa makes his way to the PSP

Posted on Sep 15, 2008 01:43:40 PM

Rocky Balboa is a PSP game which brings back the memories of the final fight of the movie, where Rocky is trying to prove how he still has the heart of a champion, and his famous quite, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”. The game has done full justice to Rocky’s extravagant fighting record. This game allows you to reenact various fights from all six of the Rocky movies. The best part is the historical game mode which allows you to fight as Rocky in 20 fights from the series. You also get to see all the known faces of the fighters, be it Apollo Creed or Mr.T.

Besides the historical mode, the player can also play in the exhibition match, where he has the choice of the various character options available. However, quite a lot of these options are just different adaptations or forms of the same character. Rocky Balboa (PSP) also features a fast lane mode, which includes a succession of challenges that have to be completed in the allocated time interval. There are around ninety of these types of challenges, and their objectives range from banging down the challenger in under a minute, to being a winner of the complete fight in just less than 10 minutes of gameplay.

As the player delivers and absorbs punches, the health bar occasionally starts blinking indicating that the fighter is just getting moody. If the player lands a particular punch now, he can then go into power mood mode, where the punches would hit much harder and have a higher chance of knocking down the rival by simply landing a few punches.

This game really looks great, as the boxers are well modeled and accurately designed. There are eighteen fighting venues available, which have been designed with perfection to match the actual boxing rings. The Rocky theme song is accompanied by the live commentary after each fight throughout the game. This game has surely been able to offer an excellent boxing experience to all Rocky fans.

This exciting PSP game comes with four control configurations. The analog stick is used to move the players around, the R button is used for blocking and the L button helps with leaning. D pad directions are also functional. Clinch is to press up, taunt is to the left and throwing an illegal blow is to the right. With the help of the down button, players can throw a signature punch.

The challenge here is to defend four areas of your body, namely left, right, upper and lower, even whilst throwing punches. The R button is the one used for blocking. The R button with a combination of face buttons enables players to change guard position and parry punches.

Fight Night Round 3 has an exciting choice of player modes. The obligatory “play now” mode lets players pair up with favorites such as Muhammad Ali, Jake LaMotta, Oscar De La Hoya or Joe Frazier to name a few. The game also features various venues including Staples Center and the country fairgrounds. All of these options add to the excitement.

The possibilities for players to create their own boxer and guide him and help him along in his career are another added bonus of this game. It starts with the amateur levels, through to the amateur title, after which he can start taking part in professional boxing. Players help their boxers inch their way to the number one spot, experiencing the enthusiasm and excitement as if they were the ones taking part.
