This game is an interesting blend of a game of collectible cards, good ideas and turn based strategy. Neverland Card Battles, though an interesting concept, could have been handled better. The tutorials are expansive, unclear and difficult to follow, the visuals and graphics lack in depth and the gameplay is tedious.
Idea Factory, the developer of this game has started the game interestingly enough. Modes include the single-player mode with a back story and an ad-hoc multiplayer mode without any storyline.
Story follows an exotic sequence from the Neverland universe influenced by Japanese anime. You are Galahad and you are in possession of the magical spectral cards. The pack of cards itself is part of the gate that has imprisoned an evil God Hellgaia who is out to destroy humanity. Teen guardian of the Gods Egma resembling a leprechaun summons you to battle and protest the breaking down of this gate. In fact, you will be fighting to defend the entire Neverland. And don’t get confused with the word Neverland, because the anime world in card battles is completey different than anything in Peter Pan - the Legend of Neverland. Back to Neverland Card Battles, where the mechanics are truly innovative. Take control of battle spaces on the checkerboard to take control and earn points. As you move allies as well as the hero Galahad, you change the colour of the board in order to gain more power. Battles themselves are based on a combination of strategy and luck.
The tutorial is quite insipid as it is more of a demo than an actual training. After your teacher Egma gives you a vague explanation of the game fundamentals, the duel that follows is quite difficult and confusing for a novice. There are absolutely no tips regarding movement timing, selection of cards, how to play certain cards and strategies.
Actual campaign is as tough as the tutorial. Here you are up against a computer who seems to get a much more favourable draws all the time. It is not possible to skip campaigns as you have to move forward methodically unlocking campaigns.
With better handling of the gameplay and visuals, this could have been a sure winner. For those who love card collectible games and battle campaigns, this is an entertaining game for your favourite PSP.
