Pimp My Ride: The Well Known MTV Show takes to the PSP

Posted on May 25, 2009 04:09:43 PM

When all you can think of is transforming your car or probably every other car around into a pimped out piece of art than you should maybe first try your hand at the Pimp My Ride game. Based on the immensely successful MTV show of the same name this game tries to get into the same groove and spirit as the show.

It features Xzibit who guides you through all the stages and the actual pimping process. Ghostride and Race through the alleys and dusty streets of Pimp City to raise cash in order to buy parts for the cars you have to customise. The Pimp my Ride PSP game features a couple of minigames like driving past some street kids and while you pass them you have to press a certain buttons in a sequence to send them squealing in a convulsive sprint towards wherever they came from. This automatically earns you some cash and when you have enough all you have to do is go to a customer with a terrible looking broken down ride. There are a total of 16 cars in the game that need to be customised. It features a bunch of nice hip hop tunes though the fact that they are few in number and are repeated quite often through out the game it turns quite annoying.

Now comes the shoddy part, the car controls are quite useless, you don’t do anything in the game except ride from one point to another and apart from the rapper Xzibit’s voice over all the other voice acting is completely silly with less than stellar unoriginal dialogue. The game could use a massive overhaul in every sphere and the fact that at the price it’s selling you have to be more than just a die-hard fan of this franchise to buy it for your PlayStation Portable.

Monster Jam: Urban Assault is incredibly mediocre

Posted on Mar 3, 2009 11:40:10 AM

One of the most mediocre games on the PlayStation Portable is Monster Jam: Urban Assault. As a player, you can now race through the monster stadiums and generic streets of the city, in this monster-truck simulation game.

There are two different modes though quite standard in its gameplay. You race on tracks with three other racers. With high flying stunts and crashes, you can obtain boost juice. Cars are quite user friendly and can be handled with ease. There is a little disorientation while you make the awkward jumps when there is a shift in the camera.

Linear and narrow race tracks with minor detours create an amount of confusion. You will find yourself running into structures and buildings placed awkwardly even while you are using the arrows to follow.

The Eliminator race mode is quite interesting as, after each lap, the lagging racer is eliminated from the race. The one left out at last is the winner. The unique “Head to Head” racing mode in Monster Jam: Urban Assault PSP is the one where every other car faces the front except two cars which race backwards. You can participate in the “Devastator” events with the help of your monster truck-sim. Trick events are styled on the line of Tony Hawk is a refreshing difference from the destructive modes. For trick enthusiasts, there are various ramps and slopes in detailed environment, offering fun and excitement.

Added excitement is offered in the form of various stunt events. In a certain mode, the truck is treated as a bowling ball. In another mode, you will go hurtling along with your truck into a Skee ball which is huge.

Visuals of the Monster Jam: Urban Assault is pretty mediocre and there is no depth and weight in the design of the cars. When a lot of action is ongoing on the screen, there is a significant dip in the frame rate. A lot of areas therefore could have been worked on to present a much better driving game, though this is certainly not one of the worst. If you are a driving game enthusiast and have tried out every other game, then maybe you should go in for this one too.

Ferrari Challenge: Go into Overdrive on the PSP

Posted on Dec 9, 2008 04:50:12 PM

Racing games have been popular ever since video games came into existence. To race around on a two wheeler or a stunning four wheeler is every player’s dream. Ferrari Challenge is one such game which comes to provide gamers with a lot of excitement and thrill.

In order to stand out amidst a host of racing games, the game needs to be extraordinary in its style and features. It is one of those handheld games with high hopes that many critics does not actually live up to expectations. With average features and limited speed experience, there is a feeling this game could have been more exciting than this.

Racing lovers however find no difficulty in overlooking certain inconsistencies and enjoy this game of racing with certain attractive features. The most interesting and intriguing part of the game is its tutorials. While you go through various aspects in the tutorial, you can collect points based on overtaking opponents, braking effortlessly in corners, following racing line, etc. If you drive off the track, collide or overtaken, points are accordingly deducted.

As the points are deducted or awarded immediately, you can keep tab on your score as you drive around. This incentive based scheme is highly engaging as compared to just winning or losing. However this feature comes only in the tutorials and not in the actual racing game.

As you win races, you get to collect cards. You can use these cards when you go on to race in the Challenger Card mode. You play this game by comparing statistics and features of different Ferraris in your card. You win if you have higher stats.

The models and environment around are interesting and you can enjoy racing with the help of the map and speedometer at the bottom of the screen. Ferrari Challenge comes with real time sound effects. Even the fading of the engine noise is appropriately integrated to add in to the sense of reality.

With the help of the multiplayer single card option, you can race around with the AI opponents and at least four of your friends. If you are a die hard fan of racing and love Ferraris, this game is ideal for you.

Juiced: Eliminator: Takes Racing to new Heights

Posted on Nov 27, 2008 02:26:16 PM

Racing is one of the successful genres of gaming. Right from the ancient times, racing had been the most popular of the games. The special reason behind the success of racing through ages is that it tests the strength and adrenalin. Juice games are well known for their high performance, mind blowing racing releases. One of their best products, Juiced: Eliminator was released for the Xbox, Play station and PC in 2006. The game was intended to capture the shelves of the car modding community, but it does have a few flaws.

Juiced: Eliminator, launched for the PSPs has many improvements from the console game with a slew of new features. One of the enthralling features of the Juiced: Eliminator is its single player career mode. The game has few setbacks too; The most important problem of the game revolves around the driving mechanics and track design of the game. The game is all about driving cars. In this case, when the driving is not appreciable it brings down in the entire feel of the game. Applying brakes in a turn tends to make the car skid and fishtail out of control.

The game however allows the player to perform few good moves. The car could be thrown to a spin more often. Additional points could be earned by performing moves like 180, 360, J-turns etc. The diverse design of the tracks makes it difficult for the player to recall the flow of any track. The player has to master his driving skills and entirely rely on the on-screen map to make it to the finishing point. Juiced: Eliminator allows the players to set up his own race on an open day. Based on the practice on tracks, the player will automatically upgrade his racing skills and could compete in international championships. The stronger the skills of the player, the greater are his reputation. By maintaining a high reputation, the player will be able to participate in the races across the world. For those who want a compelling and rather open career mode, the Juiced: Eliminator is the right game to opt.

You can change features like decals, color of the window tint, the neon under glow, etc. As you go around winning races, you get to collect performance upgrades such as higher acceleration, new tires and precise handling.

This game is not all simple and easy. If you are looking for some unforgiving and challenging moments, pick up this game. There are instances in Hot Wheels: Ultimate Racing where you find yourself coming last in the race in spite of leading in the first two laps. You have to be deft and memorize the courses to improve efficiency.

There are a few flaws which have to be overlooked if you are looking to enjoy the game. The controls are not so fluid with the ineffective handbrake and bad responsiveness. This often results in you crashing headlong into a wall. However, as you continue playing this exciting game, you tend to work around the flaws as the more positive aspects of the game keep you entertained.

As you play along, you learn how to expertly handle functions like R2 which slows time and R1 which boosts. With the help of R2, you can slow down and expertly negotiate corners. You have to be quick and responsive in using this control as you are about to crash into a wall or mess up your jump.

There are eleven tracks closely resembling the original Hot Wheel tracks. Enemies and traps on these tracks add excitement and fun. Hot Wheels fans can enjoy hours of fun from this budget game on their favorite PSP.

Need For Speed ProStreet races its way to the PSP

Posted on Nov 3, 2008 04:26:31 PM

Electronic Arts’ latest release into the handheld world came with the Need For Speed: Pro Street for the PlayStation Portable. Pro Street hit most of the major platforms late last year, and now has made its way on to the PSP as well.

Like most of its predecessors on the Portable, Pro Street also has a story line completely tied with the console versions. Of course, considering the hardware limitations, some of the game executions, and some rather interesting parts of the game had to be removed or altered. Take customization, for instance. The Console versions heavily emphasized the customization aspect of the game, with in- game features such as AutoSculpt, that let you play around endlessly with your ride. The PSP version sobers down a little on this, by limiting customization to only changing colours, tints and a very select few decals and vinyl.

Performance customizations, however, still have their levels of performance parts to improve how your car rides. Need for Speed: ProStreet PSP follows in the footsteps its predecessors, and starts off by locking most of the awesome rides in store for you. They will only be available when you can complete certain events. This adds to the challenge of the game as your stock car can prove quite incapable of winning some of the events that unlock newer cars, and you have to find a way to win. Performance boosts may help, but in the end it boils down to how you use the car.

A unique feature of this game, known as Driver Intuition, is used as a sort of temporary upgrade. Basically, you gain driver intuition by winning events and races. During a race, pressing circle will get you to a screen, which you can use to improve performance based on the driver intuition rating.

Most of the tracks have been ported down as well, and with a fairly decent level of detail, considering the hardware.

The game has a nice interface, with menus and HUD easily manipulated to your convenience. If you’ve played Need for Speed: Pro Street on the consoles, then you’ll find this game quite predictable. It is, however, a decent port to the PSP.

The Metal is Twisted and on the PSP

Posted on Oct 13, 2008 01:06:37 PM

Undoubtedly the Twisted Metal series has played a great role in promoting the Sony PlayStation’s success. If we revert to 2001, that time the original car classic combat was the first classic title on the PlayStation. This renowned series has gone through several ups and downs, but it still manages to glorify the PlayStation Portable with its latest addition Twisted Metal: Head On.

None of its charm and bite has been lost during the past years, as the game appears as fresh as ever. The title includes great action packed race courses, colorful and vibrant characters, a fantastic presentation and WiFi multiplayer action to make it a clear PSP success story. If you’ve previous versions, then you’ll find this one has a very similar feel to its predecessors.

In some ways, this demolition, destroy everything title actually has more in common with first person shooters than it does with other driving games. As a player you’ll get access to an ample amount of weapons, including machine guns, missiles, bombs, mines, napalm–you name it. More than 15 different vehicles are available in Twisted Metal Head On (PSP), and each contains distinct attributes for handling, top speed, armor, etc. and unique special attacks. You’ll even get a bulldozer from Mr. Slam that assists you in picking up and throwing the vehicles like nothing. The game involves all those tensed and exciting moments such as tearing your way through bumpy environments, or running over health, and weapons power ups while keeping an eye on radar for nearby opponents. Often, a sharp 180 degree turn becomes indispensable and for that you’ve got a nitro booster together with a handy emergency brake.

The exaggerated environments are actually based on existing real world locations and contain plenty of secret nooks and employable crannies. Responsive controls are always essential for an excellent driving experience, and fortunately this game delivers. Ultimately the demolition title does a great job of carrying on the series legacy and is a must-have for the PSP.
