The Warriors: Fighting game makes its Way to the PSP

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 03:51:29 PM

The Warriors, which was offered on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox based on the 1979 cult classic film of Walter Hill proved well worth the effort. Not just a bland remake of the film, the game added in a lot of spice and back story to the situations and characters.

The same ‘Warriors’ has made its way to the PlayStation Portable. This beat em’ up game looks good on the handheld. Storyline and features have been retained from the original and thankfully; there is no extra content addition in a bid to cram in as much as possible.

The game is all about the trials and situations faced by one of the gangs going around in New York, the Warriors. The Warriors PSP version starts just as in the movie where the gang is on their way to meet the enigmatic leader of Gramercy Riffs Cyrus. A grand plan for a unified gang movement is laid down by Cyrus. Just as it looks like he is going to convince everyone, he is shot by a gunman and the crowd scatters with the police on their heels. After this point, the game shifts basically away from the movie.

The well written storyline and script with blunt and curse filled dialogs are quite effective adding to the atmosphere. Most of the game is the beat ‘em up type and as a player you will be indulging in a lot of brawling. Fights are similar with a lot of ground attacks and jumping. Fighting engine is simple but environments are unpredictable adding to the fun and excitement. You will find a host of fighters appearing on the screen all of a sudden making the game very fast paced and hectic.

Instead of just sending groups of bad guys at you to keep fighting, Warriors makes it more interesting by giving players plenty of interesting tasks to break the action. Another interesting feature in this game is the checkpoint save system which is good and eliminates the need to replay long sequences. Level designs are attractive and exciting and sequences are well set offering hours of fun and thrill on your favourite PSP.

Armored Core: Formula Front - Extreme Battle is a Robot fighting Game on the PSP

Posted on Apr 12, 2009 04:32:15 PM

This is a simulation game which comes with steep learning curve. The PSP game features a lot of parameters and parts. The giant fighting robot can be customized and pitted against your friends as you play the multiplayer option.

Awesome firepower and metal is what comes to our mind when we start playing Armored Core: Formula Front Extreme Battle. This game from publishers 505 Games plays surprisingly well on the handheld. This game is in depth with a mech management filled with heavy stats.

As a player, you are in charge of a rookie team. The team consists of armored core or AC units numbering five. In order to equip yourself to square off with other mechs in the Formula Front, a futuristic sport, you assemble these AC units and tune them like an architect. As a player, you find yourself spending most of your time in the garage assembling the units with various parts and weapons.

You have to keep in mind various aspects as you build your robot. These include the mobility, heat, weight and energy output. One of the funnest parts of Armored Core: Formula Front - Extreme Battle is balancing the six different AC unit stats. Weapon targeting and radar disruption can be used to resist electronic countermeasures for the AC unit such as the cooling, energy supply, mobility, defensive power, attack power and VS ECM. By balancing all these effectively, it is possible to obtain an overall good rating.

It is possible to tune each AC unit for a specific purpose. As you go for a match, it is possible to study your opponents and determine the extent of their skills before choosing the appropriate AC machine for use.

When the AC machine’s basic structure is ready, it has to be equipped with weapons. Players are offered a wide range of weapons such as the sniper rifles, shotguns, rocket launchers, machine guns, plasma cannons and energy blades. For maximum efficiency, it is important to select the right weapon depending on your AC machine’s capability. Battles themselves are set in different venues and last for just about three minutes.

Excellent graphics add to the enjoyment of the game and you can have hours of fun tuning AC machines in the garage and competing in battles on your favourite Playstation Portable.

Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower on the PSP

Posted on Mar 8, 2009 08:19:20 PM

This game is one of the good two dimensional fighter games on the PlayStation Portable. The Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower is similar to the Dreamcast version Vampire Chronicle for Matching Service. Those who have played the Dreamcast version of this game may find the controls a bit of an issue here on the PSP.

For example, there are no icons for characters that changes as you choose different styles of fighting. The Tower mode is an interesting addition on PSP which provides for enhanced challenge. This mode resembles a tournament mode and you take the help of three of your own characters to fight a whole lot of characters. The catch here is there is no health bar after each fight with the help of which you can recharge or refill. Often you find yourself stranded without certain important abilities like punch, kick and jump.

You therefore have to choose match ups with discretion depending on the character you are going to fight with next. You also have to ration your health among the three as you continue fighting. In other words, you fight as long as you are able to survive.

As you win fights, you unlock exciting character arts which complement the cool, stylish and neat characters. Character designing, in fact, is the highlight of Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower. In keeping with Capcom’s creativity, character interpretation is excellent providing players with an awesome feeling playing with monsters. The Dracula for example is equipped with a superman-like physique.

The basic mode of the game offers you a choice of seven deadly battles, eighteen characters and three versions of the Darkstalkers game. Considering the game revolves heavily around your ability to perform the fireball swivel move, the controls are not good enough to enable you perform this move effortlessly, making it highly frustrating. The directional pad of the PSP is a major obstacle in this regard splashing cold water on the enjoyment it could have otherwise provided.

Sound and graphics are excellent making up for any flaws in the control. With the Wi-Fi connectivity, you can play from two PSPs and two copies of the game effortlessly. On the whole this Capcom game is quite a satisfying one you can enjoy on your favourite PSP.

Capcoms Classic Collection Remixed

Posted on Nov 24, 2008 10:41:38 AM

Handheld devices have seen tons of old school games compiled into a single disc. Capcom Classics Collection Remixed is no exception. The Capcom Classics Collection Remixed is a collection of some of Capcom’s finest classics into a single UMD for the average PSP user.

These compilations don’t just give gamers a lot of variety to choose from, but also have that feeling of nostalgia, and is a great history lesson for those interested to learn what gaming has evolved from.

Capcom Classics Collection Remixed was already a compilation way back from 2005, before it reached the PlayStation Portable. It’s counterpart on the Xbox and PS2 even missed out on a lot of games, like 1941, Captain Commando, Magic Sword and Strider, that weren’t included in their versions.

Capcom has done well to emulate the games perfectly on the PSP, down to every last detail. Credit for this translation goes to Digital Eclipse, again. Load times are also awesome… it amounts to about 12 – 15 second to load a game, and no more loads till you switch titles.

Capcom has also thrown in some bonuses, such as unlockable artwork, game history and even some gameplay tips. Multiplayer wasn’t left out of the Capcom Classics Collection Remixed edition either. On the contrary, its easy interface is one of the coolest features of the collection. It locates buddies faster than any game on the PSP, and has easy options for leaving and entering a game with the touch of a button.

As in all collections, some games don’t match up to the standards of others, but the other games in the title make up for their lack of entertainment.

The collection includes 20 games, including 1941, Forgotten Worlds, Black Tiger, Bionic Commando, Strider, Speed Rumbler, Quiz & Dragons, the original Street Fighter, Mega Twins, Last Duel and the likes.

To conclude, the Capcom Classics Collection Remixed is a great choice for Capcom fans and casual gamers alike, providing hours of entertainment, and some great multiplayer choices. It has it’s own ups and downs in terms of included titles, but the Ups overshadow the downs enough to keep you wanting more.

Legend of the Dragon: Cartoon takes to the PSP

Posted on Nov 12, 2008 03:54:36 PM

Another fighting game from Game Factory is the Legend of the Dragon. This interesting game is based on a currently aired cartoon. Story line revolves around the fifteen year old twins Ang and Ling.

The setting is a conflict based on martial arts. This fight features humans who can turn into horrible looking creatures resembling beasts. Ang and Ling are featured on the opposite sides of this conflict.

If you are looking for mind gripping excitement in thrilling combats and fights, this game is probably not for you. The conflict featured here involves a stripped down fighting. Controls in the Legend of the Dragon PSP version essentially consist of just one for punching and one for kicking. A couple of combinations enable you to use both together when necessary. As a human, you cannot perform any special moves. You continue fighting to accumulate energy as displayed in the rising meter.

Main characters in the game sport a human form and are armored. People around them transform into creatures resembling rats and snakes. 2D fighter with 3D ring movements is what the game feels like as you continue with your attacks in a similar manner even if you transform. Special attacks can be negotiated with the help of the accumulated energy.

One interesting attack enables you to launch an energy beam bringing you to the edge of your seat in excitement and frenzy. With the help of another type of attack, you can launch fireballs rhythmically. Controller waves and button presses timed perfectly have to be executed by the opposing player to dodge these fireballs.

The quest mode is challenging and interesting too. Here you take the help of a map screen to move Ang and Ling around, resembling a board game.

Every temple you come across in the map poses challenges for you to face and conquer. Interest is maintained with different challenges for different situations. For example, if one fight has a time limit, another requires you to use skillfully strategic attacks.

Moderately thrilling, fun and entertainment is what this game is all about. Enjoy this with friends and family on your favorite PSP.

Beowulf: Funny and Interesting PSP Adventure

Posted on Nov 4, 2008 02:44:24 PM

Beowulf is a funny and interesting game on the PSP. As you start playing this game as Beowulf, you embark on the interesting and challenging journey of rescuing a kingdom from the monster’s yoke of Grendel.

The various challenges and trials you face during the course of action makes this game all the more exciting and fascinating. Along with your contingent of men, you travel to various interesting locales and fight some thrilling battles with trolls and enemies. You are provided with the option of moving stuff by commanding your thanes to do so.

Attacks are at two levels – heavy and light. As you attack heavily, you kill any enemy who may be around, while you are invincible. Enemies cannot come anywhere near you. Another interesting option is the berserker mode. This mode allows you to combat and get rid of enemies faster. The only hitch here is there are chances of you killing your own men with this mode. Once they die you are finished as the game ends, even though you may still possess skills and are invincible.

As your weapons break, you can pick up additional ones from a vanquished enemy. Bosses can be effectively dispatched with the help of the berserker mode. In Beowulf PSP you can take a break from your mission to periodically attend camps. In these camps you can train and equip yourselves with new skills and arm yourselves with the latest weapons. With renewed energy and confidence you can go back for another string of heavy attacks.

The tempo of this game is kept alive and complemented with fluid animations and excellent graphics. The wonderful character from the poem Beowulf is brought to life on the PSP and, though there is no multiplayer mode on offer, you can enjoy endless hours of fun and excitement just playing on your own.

Go dashing around with your men, fighting challenging enemies and save the kingdom from Grendel the monster. Attend camps to refine skills and maneuver your way around interesting locales to reach your goal. Beowulf is sure to give you value for every penny you pay for the game.

SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 PSP: All your Arcade Fun in one Place

Posted on Oct 31, 2008 04:37:37 PM

SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 is the next compilation title from SNK. They seem to be throwing out a lot of compilations off late, bringing old arcade gaming classics to modern gamers worldwide.

Sixteen of the old SKN arcade favorites are compiled into a single UMD for use on the PlayStation Portable. With sixteen games on a single UMD, you’re basically only paying a little less than two dollars for a great old time arcade game.

A simple menu, somewhat retro based helps you choose which game you’re going to play from an alphabetically organized menu, and gives you some more basic information on the title such as genre, year of release, number of players, etc.

For those who want specific details, the game list includes Shock Troopers, World Heroes, King of fighters ’94, Last Resort, Sengoku, Baseball Stars 2, Art of Fighting, King of Monsters, Top Hunter, Fatal Fury, Burning Fight, Neo Turf Masters, Super Sidekicks 3, Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown and Magician Lord.

Another added ‘attraction’ is the addition of goals to complete for each game. Goals can be accomplished through straightforward tasks such as completing a game on a certain difficulty level, and completing goals can unlock a wide range of goodies, such as artwork for other games in the collection, or unlocking move lists for fighting games.

Multiplayer over a wireless connection is quite fun to play, as almost all titles connect seamlessly over a wireless connection to other PSPs, although the Two player mode for these classics were a smoother version than the multiplayer mode, and probably a better choice.

Single player game play is unbeatable, and it lets you enjoy every bit of the old arcade experience right at your fingertips. Games like Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters, Last Resort and Top Hunter provide an exceedingly simple yet amazingly entertaining game play experience, provided you enjoy playing old time classic arcade games.

One of the best features of the title is the diversity of games. It has at least one of each great genre, such as fighting, sports, side-scrollers, and what not. SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 PSP is a must have for those who missed out on the Neo Geo era of gaming, and all the classic arcade games that came with it.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2: The Phantom Fortress

Posted on Oct 28, 2008 05:23:16 PM

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2: The Phantom Fortress is the second game in the series for the PlayStation Portable. It is a casual fighting game. It may just as well be a revamped version of its predecessor, and while it still has its own share of problems, you’ll find Phantom Fortress to be more entertaining, and considerably longer.

For those who aren’t familiar with the series, here are the basics. Phantom Fortress, like it’s predecessor, works on two 2- dimensional planes, one with the foreground and one with the background environments. So even though the environments and characters are 3D, deep down, the game is still a 2D fighter.

The gameplay is relatively simple, as all attacks accessible with the circle button, and combos are executed with the added directional input, and maybe a couple more button presses. Standard to most Naruto titles, each character in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 PSP has a Chakra bar, in addition to a health bar, which determines how many and what level of jutsus, or techniques, you can deploy. The player can also use items during fights.

The battles can be quite easy for most of the gaming enthusiasts who just want to have a good Naruto experience, as all attacks involve button bashing the circle button. However, one can get a lot more out of the game by actually using the items and advanced controls.

The story line has been extended a bit to do justice to the game’s title, by adding a new mode known as the Mugenjo mode. In this arc, Naruto is thrown into a fortress known, obviously, as the Phantom Fortress, which sucks life out of everything around it. Having that appear about the Hidden Leaf Village poses an obvious problem, so Naruto is faced with the task of getting rid of it.

The mode takes you back to the days of Dungeon crawling, moving your character’s icon between rooms, facing enemies and completing mini-games. A number of different scrolls activate different game types as well. There are tons of other goodies to unlock during the game, like artwork and songs and other stuff, making the games overall experience an enjoyable one.
