Sony Computer Entertainment America has just announced that the new updated firmware for the PlayStation Portable will be launched this month. PSP fans will receive the firmware version 5.0., and PlayStation 3 fans will also be glad since they will be getting an update as well. The new PSP firmware 5.0 will allow PSP users to connect directly to the PlayStation Store, and then purchase and download a wide selection of media, including movies, games and demos. There is no need to transfer that data through the PlayStation 3 or PC either.
The new firmware offer many advantages to PSP users. Sony Entertainment has already increased the amount of downloadable PSP games and movies. A report from UK consumer website CVG reveals that the Sony Entertainment Japan will release all of its future UMD games as PS Store downloads. The first title to make the online debut will be ‘Destroy All Heroes 2’.
The firmware version 5.0 includes an onscreen QWERTY keyboard which makes web browsing much easier. In addition to that, it also contains a sleep timer, which can be used for shutting off the PSP during musical playback. The video out functionality has also improved a lot, supports interlace displays and allows classic PlayStation titles to play at full-screen size on the TV. The quality of the official headsets has improved as well. They feature a high quality mode, which, when activated, delivers clear and wide-band wireless voice communication.
According to Peter Dille, SCEA’s PlayStation Network Marketing SVP, ”These firmware updates keep both PS3 and PSP in lockstep with consumer expectations for gaming and entertainment, particularly the ability to download PSP games on-the-go, which is a functionality we know consumers can’t wait to get their hands on. As we approach our second anniversary with Sony PlayStation 3, it’s remarkable to look back at how much the system has evolved and improved, including its critical link to PSP that effectively extends these entertainment capabilities beyond the home.”

It seems like only yesterday when I was so enchanted by the PSP I just had to have it. Even before I laid eyes on it, I knew we were meant to be together. But in a very small span of time my beloved PSP has given birth to enhanced PSPs. If you recall, in the beginning the PSP was introduced with its 2.0 version which stole the hearts of millions. Since then, the PSP is continuously introducing upgrades and more advanced forms.
The list of PSP versions includes 2.01, 2.50, 2.60, 2.70, and 2.71, from the introduction of 2.0, all the way up to the present day of 4.05. All these new firmwares for the PSP Bundle may actually suggest something. Many people believe Sony only updates the firmware, in order to make it more difficult for people to run homebrew applications on their PSP, and in many instances these seems completely true. Of course, some firmware upgrades do actually offer substantive improvements, like the latest 4.05 upgrade.
The rocking PSP 4.05 incorporates video support in the RSS (Real Simple Syndication) channel with the help of which you can download videos and songs. The only thing which you’ll surely miss in this is the streaming of the song as it will not stream your songs on the handheld. The only compatible video format is MPEG-4. A user can install the 4.05 updates directly through the PSP via the System update feature when it’s connected to the internet. The memory stick duo has not been updated so far. It’s actually being used by PSP owners to download the updates directly into it. The Sony PSP 4.05 also enables its user to play AAC files with the file extensions .3gp directly. This excellent firmware is equipped with an incredible Location free player which assists the user in registering devices via the LAN (Local Area Network) access point. So overall this firmware actually offers something useful, and hopefully it is a sign of things to come from Sony.

The PSP is a revolutionary handheld gaming device, which not only offers awesome game play, but also gives one the pleasure of watching high end videos, listening to great music and storing all types of necessary data such as wallpapers etc. Everyday something new arrives for the PSP on the market. Lots of new and improved applications get launched every day. But all the new applications cannot be used until your PSP is up to date. Therefore, it is necessary to keep your PSP updated. This will not only allow you to enjoy all the latest stuff on the PSP but also prevent your PSP from becoming obsolete.
The best way to upgrade the PSP is to get its firmware updated. The firmware is the heart of your PSP and directly influences its performance. So, it should be updated from time to time. You can update the PSP firmware in different ways. The easiest way is to connect your PSP to a Wi-Fi connection and download the latest firmware directly to the PSP. Alternatively, the firmware can be first downloaded to the PC and then be transferred to the PSP. You should always download the firmware which corresponds to the specific region. On the basis of the region you will find a lot of upgrades for your PSP in the market. Generally all the upgrades enhance the audio and video handling capability of the PSP and some specific features. If you are upgrading your PSP via the PC then you must have at least 20MB free space on your memory stick. Only then can you download the firmware upgrade on the PC. After that, connect your PSP with the PC via USB or the memory stick.
To begin upgrading, go to the home menu in your PSP and select the appropriate option. The most important thing is to store the update files at a proper location; otherwise the PSP will not be able to identify the data. Another thing to keep in mind is while upgrading the PSP there should not be any kind of halts or stoppages. The battery should be fully charged or you can attach a power adaptor to the PSP to ensure smooth power supply during the upgrading process. If there are power hiccups in between, then your PSP is likely to get damaged.

Homebrews are the juice of the PSP community. An ever-growing suite of all applications that are almost free and what’s more you have a thriving community to back you up with any technical problems you might face. Much better than some commercial software available, we must admit. There are lots and lots of such homebrew applications that can literally change the capabilities of your PSP overnight, but you should look to the very best for starters. Please do note that you must have homebrew-capable firmware on your PSP for these applications to run. Also, note that Sony doesn’t support your homebrews and you bear all risk after voiding your warranty.
Do you smell something? — The Wifi Sniffer : How about letting your PSP sniff around and pick up other PSPs nearby? Won’t it be fun to check them out and monitor your status? This homebrew works only with firmware 1.50. You can also use this application to connect to open networks and take your PSP online.
Your PSP as a remote control: Ever wanted to have a single remote control for everything you wanted to operate. You can now do so by using this homebrew and the PSP’s infrared port. A cool application to control most of your other electronic gadgets with and there are detailed guides and tutorials to help to install and run it. This application also requires firmware 1.50.
Always be connected with AFKIM (Away from keyboard Instant Messenger): It is an instant messenger program for PSP and is almost universal — in the sense that it can handle MSN, Gtalk, Yahoo Messenger, AOL and more. You can’t get more connected that this, can you? So, like its name says, if you’re away from your keyboard, you can still instant message with your PSP. Guess what? It seems to work with version 2.0 firmware — the one that your Latest PSP comes with.
