Madden NFL 09: The Latest Edition of the Iconic Franchise

Posted on Feb 12, 2009 06:11:46 PM

The Madden NFL franchise from Electronic Arts Sports gets its latest installment in the form of Madden NFL 09. The game doesn’t change much from the previous version, but it does have its ups. It has some new features implemented into it, but nothing that will essentially change any gameplay mechanics.

One of the biggest additions is the inclusion of Rookie Mode, which simplifies all gameplay mechanisms for beginners to get the hang of Madden NFL 09. With the features made so easy, the learning curve is drastically reduced, and it works well for those who are new to the game and just want to try it out.

There are prompts and assists to help you out through the game in rookie mode, and you’ll be concentrating on just the basic four buttons. For instance, when you’re on the offensive, square enables you to dive, circle lets you spin, and hitting X will perform highlighted moves.

On the defensive, X will perform big hits, circle will switch players and square will make your player dive. Every other aspect of the game has been simplified so everyone can play. This is of absolutely no use to the older Madden NFL players, but can attract a whole bunch of newbie’s to the game.

While rookie mode can be a plus point, it does have its minuses too. When you play in rookie mode, you won’t understand much of what John Madden is saying, and you won’t get why one play is better than another, and which play to use in what situation, which forms a major part of the Madden NFL gameplay mechanism.

Rookie mode is one of the main additions to the game, and apart from that, it is pretty much the same as Madden NFL 08 on the PSP. Visuals of the game seem to have improved a bit, but nothing substantial. Because of the lack of screen space, and the tight cameras, formations won’t entirely be seen on screen, and sometimes, it’s hard to figure out if everyone is in position or not.

Overall, the game does the job of keeping old fans happy, and making new fans, but if you’re looking for something different from Madden NFL 08, then you’re going to be disappointed.

Review of the exciting Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 game from Konami

Posted on Feb 6, 2009 11:41:48 AM

Keeping up to the standards set by EA Sports has been an uphill task for Konami. On the portable front, however, the lower investment gives the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 does have a chance.

One of the highlights of the PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is the Become a Legend mode. Apart from attractive changes in the presentation, this mode provides for better performance on the same lines as the Be a Pro mode in FIFA 09. In this mode, you can create a player from ground basics, assign him with attribute points and a position and start the process of building him up. Enhanced user interface includes assigning special skills to your footballer and an arrow that indicates positioning on the field. The whole process is lengthy enough to keep the player entertained.

There are certain issues with the camera performance. In the Become a Legend mode, camera is pretty close to action as compared to the console version. This makes it difficult to keep up wit the ball movement. Though the movement of the camera is quite effortless and fluid, it sometimes moves too fast making it disoriented and difficult for the player to keep up. For example, as you try taking a pass coming towards you up field, even before you turn, you find a defender you would not have expected to materialize and grab the ball from you. Should the game become too difficult for, which is unlikely, you can always have fun using the many cheat codes available.

In spite of the expected rigid movement of players, the action in Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is solid enhanced by interesting environments and colours. For enthusiastic football fans, this game is entertaining and interesting. Wireless option supports multiplayer mode which is an exciting addition to the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 hand held version.

Other interesting features include the list of cups, exhibition, the Master League where you can effectively control moves of your team, etc. Training mode however is very ineffective offering no training what so ever.

Though much can be improved in the game, Become a Legend mode and the wireless multiplayer online mode provides for excitement and entertainment for football enthusiasts.

All these teams play against each other, and you as a manager have to make sure that your team lives up to its full potential.

The first thing that the gamer needs to do as a manager after setting up his profile is to choose a league which he/she feels like running and the amount of depth that the gamer wants to go into regarding the game details. In Championship Manager (PSP), the player will choose from a selection of real leagues and will then be responsible for all the decisions made, just like a real life manager who is held accountable for all the happenings in the team. Blitz: Overtime for the PSP

Posted on Jul 25, 2008 11:04:49 AM

You always dreamt of being the tough guy? Now is your chance to realize that dream on your PSP as Midway Games brings you Blitz: Overtime. An unlicensed version of the NFL Blitz series, the game has been designed on the same theme, namely, Football.

Unlike true NFL Football, the game features 18 fictitious leagues where the players embroil in tough games of football mostly full of violence and aggression. Blitz: The League has already been a hit on the Xbox 360, where the high-end graphics really bring the action to life. The game also features former NFL superstar Lawrence Taylor who plays Quentin Sands and captains the New York Nightmare. It is basically a hyper violent extension of gridiron football and strikes an unbelievable resemblance to the earlier versions released in the Blitz series.

Similar to all previous games in this genre, 30 yards is the distance where the first downs are awarded and 8 men are kept on the side unlike 11 in regular football. In reality, the game might turn into a battleground if there were no match referees and penalties but the game does not feature either of them. The players in the game tackle each other quite viciously and the blocks also seem to be very barbaric. The “Clash” meter is given as a reward to players when they score, gain yards, force turnovers and make successful tackles. As soon as the “Clash” meter charges up, the players have been given the energy to run wild on emotions as they can perform “dirty” stiff arms, dodges, and “dirty” hits while defending. All these amusing antics lead decrease levels of stamina and morale in the opposition camp and occasionally even results in injuries being afflicted on them as well.

The singe player mode against the computer is actually quite difficult. The opponent or the computer player becomes almost unbeatable and it requires great skill to overcome the challenge.

The game is loaded with heaps of action, which one you might associate with a street fight or brawl, but takes place on the field in the game. So, if you are one of those guys who really likes their football brutal and violent, then this would a good title for you.

Now your wait is over as a brand new soccer oriented game is on hand for your adorable Play Station Portable. This latest version is very impressive and offers many improvements over its predecessor. For instance, this editiont offers a wide degree of customization and numerous alternatives to make the gameplay more interesting and exhilarating. When you go through the game you’ll feel as if you are watching a match. This is because the graphics are astonishing and make the players and atmosphere appear both realistic and natural.

One thing which remains uncorrected is the absence of major clubs, which give limited options to gamers. Newcastle and Tottenham now replace Arsenal and Manchester United, which have reverted back to North London and Man Red. In Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (PSP) you will also notice major improvements in the French, Dutch and Italian leagues. A gamer can construct his/her own team with name edited players if desired.

Concerning concern modes, PES2008 has lot to offer like single matches, world tour, leagues, regional tournament, training sessions, ad-hoc multiplayer and konami cup. The master league breathes new life into soccer oriented titles as it provides a full season of play and allows you to manage the team along the way. You will feel more attached to your team as you are authorized to juggle salaries, player transfers and keep track of your club’s finances. World Tour and standard league competitions will provide more scope to perform as it involves several tasks, including winning a comfortable victory of two goals or higher over your opposition, getting a few last-minute goals in to cinch a win, or performing a hat trick. Overall a very decent title, which no soccer fan should go without.
