Silent Hill: Shattered Memories First Look at the Upcoming Survival Horror Game

Posted on Apr 22, 2009 02:54:42 PM

Ten years ago, the creepy world of Silent Hill was released on the PlayStation by Konami. This was in keeping with the trend of survival horror games added with the spice of a psychological horror as well. Konami now plans the Silent Hill: Shattered Memories as a revamp of its original version.

In this game, you play as Harry Mason. He is a desperate father in search of his daughter who is lost in the Silent Hill. Silent Hill is a place that is positively creepy with freaky characters. All around, during your quest, you will come across supernatural monsters.

Developers Climax Studios is looking to keep the original, basic framework of this game intact. They call this new version a ‘reimagining’ rather than a remake. So expect it to be similar to other titles from the series, like Silent Hill: Origins PSP, but with improved features, and graphics naturally. So, even for those who have played the original game, this game is set to offer a completely different perspective.

The game’s interface is interestingly enough Harry’s mobile phone. With the help of this, users can access various features including the map of the town. It is possible for you to make and receive phone calls. Supernatural clues can be revealed with the help of pictures shown to the locals. There are familiar faces from the original game. In contrast to the original game, this game gives you a gun and not a lead pipe for your protection as you go around the spooky town. As Harry, you will have to use your experience to outbeat the creatures eager to get at out. For example, as Harry is caught by the enemies, he just has to shake them off and run to escape.

The city itself will be altered to reflect your interactions with the characters and the choices that you make. The Silent Hill: Shattered Memories comes with advanced graphics and the environmental and character details are fascinatingly crisp. Weather elements such as fog and snow are realistically portrayed.

Audio is completely new and this score is composed by Akira Yamaoka, the original composer. This game seems to be all set to take the fans on an interesting journey in the spooky land. Enjoy hours of fun searching for Harry’s daughter on your favourite PSP

Review of the exciting Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 game from Konami

Posted on Feb 6, 2009 11:41:48 AM

Keeping up to the standards set by EA Sports has been an uphill task for Konami. On the portable front, however, the lower investment gives the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 does have a chance.

One of the highlights of the PSP version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is the Become a Legend mode. Apart from attractive changes in the presentation, this mode provides for better performance on the same lines as the Be a Pro mode in FIFA 09. In this mode, you can create a player from ground basics, assign him with attribute points and a position and start the process of building him up. Enhanced user interface includes assigning special skills to your footballer and an arrow that indicates positioning on the field. The whole process is lengthy enough to keep the player entertained.

There are certain issues with the camera performance. In the Become a Legend mode, camera is pretty close to action as compared to the console version. This makes it difficult to keep up wit the ball movement. Though the movement of the camera is quite effortless and fluid, it sometimes moves too fast making it disoriented and difficult for the player to keep up. For example, as you try taking a pass coming towards you up field, even before you turn, you find a defender you would not have expected to materialize and grab the ball from you. Should the game become too difficult for, which is unlikely, you can always have fun using the many cheat codes available.

In spite of the expected rigid movement of players, the action in Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is solid enhanced by interesting environments and colours. For enthusiastic football fans, this game is entertaining and interesting. Wireless option supports multiplayer mode which is an exciting addition to the Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 hand held version.

Other interesting features include the list of cups, exhibition, the Master League where you can effectively control moves of your team, etc. Training mode however is very ineffective offering no training what so ever.

Though much can be improved in the game, Become a Legend mode and the wireless multiplayer online mode provides for excitement and entertainment for football enthusiasts.

Rengoku II: Suffers from some severe Problems

Posted on Dec 11, 2008 06:06:34 PM

Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory was released by Konami in 2005, and quite frankly, it wasn’t very good. It had a not so good control scheme, some terrible level detail and a very unbalanced battle system. The game had some good backing, like artwork from Manga artist Jun Suemi, and should have done way better than what it did do. This being said, the sequel’s announcement gave hope to many that the mistakes of the first would be corrected in the second. Well, that’s partially true with Rengoku II: The Stairway to H.E.A.V.E.N..

Rengoku II is placed in the future, where war plagues earth, and humans fight with Autonomous Dueling Armed Machines, or A.D.A.Ms. You control an A.D.A.M in the game, and it can salvage any weapon off defeated opponents to use as it’s own. Weapons or items can be used in four parts of he body simultaneously, namely the arms, torso and head. So basically you have four different attacks at a given point of time. You can’t just use one weapon forever, as continuous use will overheat it. So you need to distribute the power equally.

Adjustments to the combat system aren’t that great. In fact, only two changes have been made. One is that you can now fire while strafing, and you can control the A.D.A.M with the analog nub. It is still really hard to pull off combos, which are possibly the only way to maximize damage. Combos take too long to execute, and the only time you can actually pull off one is when you overkill the enemy.

You can save the game only at the terminals, which are placed at the entrance of every tower level. Theses terminals also let you upgrade your systems. You can use the points received from defeating enemies or melting unwanted weapons to perform upgrades.

The game is for sure better than Rengoku I, but it still lacks a lot. The game has some potential but with some sloppy modeling and game play, Rengoku 2 really doesn’t quite cut it. There are better action titles out there, rendering this just a waste of money. Knowing that it was published by Konami probably helps.

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops Plus is an instant Classic

Posted on Dec 2, 2008 01:58:21 PM

Metal Gear solid: Portable Ops did a great job in bringing the Metal Gear Solid franchise to the PlayStation Portable. The game made most use of the PSP’s hardware and software capabilities to deliver one of the best games ever on the PSP.

A year later, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops + was released, not exactly as a sequel, but as an expansion. It took the already existing features of MGS: Portable Ops and improvised. After many additions and subtractions, Portable Ops + was released.

The expansion was meant to add to what the gameplay is, and make it more pleasurable to play. Tons of new features were added to Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus, such as Boss Rush mode, which lets you take on the entire bosses one after the other. Then there’s infinity mission, which puts snake in randomly generated missions on different levels, each with their own set of objectives to complete, getting progressively more difficult.

The good thing about this is that players can quickly go through multiple locations and get lots of items, or even soldiers, as Portable Ops plus, unlike the original portable ops, lets you expand your army to up to 200 soldiers, and that number can be filled up with the soldiers from the original game. The army can be divided into four- Medics, Technicians, Spies and your personal four-man team. Since each team can only have up to eight members, this encourages players to scout for the best available in each team on a regular basis.

The downside to this expansion is that many features, some really good ones; from the original Portable ops have been removed. The ops can use experience points gained to level up their skills, which poses a problem in multiplayer, as hardcore mgs gamers will have a clear advantage over other casual gamers. This can be overcome, but is still a sort of hindrance, as players can permanently lose their character to others in a multiplayer game.

The game is probably on the must-buy list for all those MGS fans out there, but not for others. The original game was leaps better, and more fun to play. The changes that this expansion makes could have easily been implemented as a downloadable patch, but $20 for it just isn’t worth it.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 takes to the PSP

Posted on Nov 18, 2008 03:51:21 PM

The Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 is yet another successful release from Konami. The earlier versions of the game have been widely recognized for its exciting features. The game is highly challenging and will test the adrenaline of the player in every level. The game includes battles through the myths and mechanics of various layers and reaching the success point. The mistakes committed in the game can make it really complex and difficult to finish.

The game has already gained fame based on the top-rated Yu-Gi-Oh! GX series from Cartoon Network. The Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 is a combat version of the original series for the PSPs. The game is initiated at the Duel Academy and the Tag Duel Tournament is the most important event of the year. The tournament has participants from all around the world and they are highly competitive. The tournament will have hundreds of teams with two members each.

The player will be introduced in to the Duel Academy as a single. He has to explore the academy and find the perfect partner for himself. After doing so, the team gets to face its opponents. The team has to exhibit their fighting skills to pull it to the next level. The additional features of the game include more cards than ever before, and new cards and new deck recipes could be added and used. The Ad Hoc feature of the game enables the multiplayer option. Many exciting add on could be downloaded for the PSP and the game could be made more challenging.

However, the critics say that there was not much of work involved in developing the PSP version of the game. It was just a copy of the previous version. Lots of comments have been made on the complexity of the game. The game consumes more time in the player understanding it. Beginners should sit through long tutorials or read through pages of help menus to get hold of the basics. But once the game captures the interest of the player, it becomes a part of the everyday gaming schedule.

Steel Horizon: Konami WWII for the PSP

Posted on Nov 17, 2008 12:16:46 PM

World War-2 served as the cornerstone for many innovative games over the past few decades. Steel Horizon is one of a kind, concentrated on naval strategies. The creators of Steel Horizon – Konami, came out with this bold release that featured real time battle sequences. However, the game did not swipe success due to few imperfections.

The players take the role of a young naval captain, who is bound by expectations and tasks. The captain has to his credit one of the most technically advanced vessel, which would help him devastate the antagonist. The player is provided with an option to choose between a battleship, a destroyer or a submarine. The choosing of the right ship to the occasion is important to raise the reputation of the captain. Steel Horizon comes to a closure when the captain’s ship is destroyed. However, the other ships in the fleet could not be upgraded at any point. This at times leaves them useless and archaic.

The options in the game allow the player to launch thirteen different kinds of ships and assist him in planning the strategies. However, these options also include hospital boats and cargo vessels that could not be employed for a combat. The inability to hide these utility ships blocks the view of the enemy ships from the player. The game can seem really slow for the players as the ships can move only few square meters per turn. When it comes to the battle, the game gets really difficult to handle. Especially while turning the ships to attack a target.

In accordance with the ship, the player gets to trigger special attacks like fire cannons, dive bombing fighter pilots to attack other fleet. The player is always left busy at micro-managing every aspect of the game. This refrains the player from planning strategies and applying tactics over the game. The 20 missions offered by Steel Horizon would leave the player on a run for conquer, but it is less likely that the graphics would hold his interest. Accomplishment of missions would however enable the player to unlock few hidden missions. On the whole, Steel Horizon is a good mixture of strategy and real time action made less enjoyable by imperfect features.

Marvel Trading Card Game

Posted on Nov 14, 2008 03:32:51 PM

The Marvel trading card game has been provided for the PSP by Upper deck entertainment in association with Konami. Resembling the Vs system which is one of Upper Deck’s most flexible, solid and robust systems, Marvel’s licensed TCG packs some of the most interesting and exciting features in its online representation which has been witnessing a multitude of activities.

For those who are not very experienced in similar TCG games earlier, this game may be a bit confusing at first glance. As you venture into playing this game, you will realize that this is b other with uniquely characterized cards. Cards are the arms with which they attack and try to deased on a whole lot of strategies. Played between two players, each player is required to attack thefeat each other until one of the players finds his or her points completely depleted.

There are different categories like equipment, twists in plot, characters and locations the cards are divided into. The main category character cards are used to attack opponents and the others are used as enhancements to aid characters in their battle by providing them with abilities.

Twists in the plots add to the excitement and challenge as you can use this option to perform various effects like forcing your opponent to discard his cards by buffing up the character cards. You can also create a host of fortune reversals during a single character clash by chaining plots twists together. As you start playing and learning the nuances of the game, you find yourself rooted to your place not wanting to give up at any stage.

Of course, luck plays a major role here as cards are draw at random from the deck. But strategy plays a major role too. Choosing the character you want to play with their different defense rating and attacks and placing them at the right place on the field plays an important role in your success.
It takes a little time and perseverance to get a hang of this game, but once you know how to go about it, no one can wean you away from the Marvel Trading Card Game and your favorite PSP.
