X-Men Origins - Wolverine PSP: Action Packed Game in Time for the X-Men Movie

Posted on May 13, 2009 03:45:31 PM

If it is gut-ripping action with trademark superhero moves that are bound to enthrall you then turn to X-Men Origins – Wolverine. The game is based on the movie of the same name set to release soon. This epic-adventure action game takes you beyond the basic storyline. The developers have infused cinema quality action sequences with a stunning use of 3D movement that the PlayStation Portable has become renowned for.

The game begins with Stryker attempting to revive Logan’s (Wolverine) lost memories by using tremendous amounts of electricity. This consequently causes him to fade into his memories that form the setting for the actual gameplay. From a recon mission in Japan the plot slowly unfolds to throw some light on Logan’s violent past. The X-Men Origins - Wolverine PSP game sheds the innocent soldier drawn by forces beyond his control, to show Wolverine as a horrifically violent stone-cold killer. The developers have introduced some really hot fighting moves apart from the usual gouging and tearing to bits. Of these the slow motion lunge with his razor-sharp adamantium claws towards the enemy is an absolute delight to watch. The rage abilities unlock special powers and moves; while his feral senses could help you gain a tactical advantage over the enemy. With over a 100 different custom moves to perform and real time regenerative powers the game offers some engaging gameplay.

The detailing in not so vivid and gets pixilated which is quite frustrating considering the leap in technology. Marvel Entertainment Inc. should have gone all out to ensure that the details are richer and have smoother detailing. Apart from the death defying moves and the razor sharp claws that rip through anything the game does not have more to offer. A great buy for gamers who hanker for their pound of flesh.

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects on the PSP

Posted on Jan 23, 2009 07:41:20 PM

This game was released for the PSP in the month of October. This game developed by EA Canada, is similar to the console version with extremely user friendly controls. You can control your weapons effectively with the help of four simple controls. In other words, you can attack, throw, jump and block. Variety and spice is added with the modifier features including Super power and Mobility.

A few strategic adjustments also enhance the game play as compared to the earlier console version. The card collection feature is impressive. There are a total of 170 cards. These can be chosen in random and digital directional pads are assigned with these by the hot keys. As you battle along, these cards can be used. They are especially useful as you battle against a player who is human.

There is only one analogue stick. Camera is effectively centered with the help of the block button. The fighting ladder is suitably altered to one-to-one basis and is a much better option than the traditional ones. Card collecting plus this approach along with Captain America and Dr. Doom, the two exclusive PSP characters, this game provides for a lot of fun and excitement for players. Marvel Nemesis is in fact the most ideal for PSP.

Rise of the Imperfects is however not absolutely perfect. There are certain minor issues. There is no variety and the game play feels quite repetitive. However, the characters in Nemesis - Rise of the Imperfects, including the villains, are quite interesting. Variety is provided in the form of three to four characters with the option of different costumes. If you play without using the cards, the game becomes more challenging. So if you are looking to finish off easily, then use the cards.

Character unlocking could have been handled better. It becomes quite cumbersome locating new combatants. You have to beat opponents over and over again in order to unlock characters. However, most of the features are interesting. Unlocking characters is actually fun. So, for an enthusiastic player, this game provides a lot of fun and entertainment for your favourite PSP.

Electronic Arts should have also done better with how it handles character unlocking. For a game that’s as simple and straightforward as this, it makes finding new combatants to mess around with a real chore. Sure, you’ll begin with The Thing of Fantastic Four fame and the newly-created Johnny Ohm, but that’s it. Most of the remaining 16 fighters all have to be uncovered by systematically going through and beating opponents again and again and again. This can make two-player games, which is the guaranteed highlight of the experience, even more repetitious in the early going. Plan to spend a lot of time unlocking folks if you want to have any fun with it.

At least the decision to include Terry Dodson instead of Jae Lee as the character designer for the project was a good one. The handheld iteration of Rise of the Imperfects looks much more like a comic book than its bigger counterpart, and it works really well on PSP. It’s just too bad that the storyline (which was actually pretty intriguing on consoles) gets lost in the shuffle with the god-awful intro paragraphs that accompany each fight.

Closing Comments

To its credit, the PSP version of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects does a better job of catering to its audience than the console versions did. This style of gameplay is definitely better in small doses, and when playing against another person it can actually be fun if you don’t have anything else to play. On the other hand, the fighting mechanics get repetitive very quickly and the AI is a total idiot. As a single-player game, there’s sadly not much to the experience beyond that.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance takes to the PSP

Posted on Nov 26, 2008 01:50:45 PM

Marvel has been one of the biggest comic brands ever, and we’ve seen as they made their way into the gaming industry. On the portable consoles, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is one of the best. It takes features from their previous games like X-Men Legends and greatly improves on them.

Marvel: ultimate Alliance is an RPG for the PlayStation Portable. The game features over 20 playable superheroes from the Marvel Universe, taking them through a massive campaign in all familiar locations against a whole host of Marvel Super villains. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has tons of hidden Easter eggs to unlock as well. It’s great that almost all the features of the console versions have been crammed into the PSP version.

From the beginning of the game, to the very end, the game doesn’t seem to lose pace. Right in the beginning, your heroes go up against Dr. Doom, who has brought a whole bunch of well-known enemies together to form the Masters of Evil, their first objective being to attack the Helicarrier S.H.I.E.L.D. The game progresses as the superheroes follow the Masters of Evil through the marvel universe and stop their evil plots. You’ll face almost every super villain from the marvel universe, from the top guys like Ultron, Mephisto and Galactus to not so popular guys like the Grey gargoyle, Arcade and Blackheart.

The story is portrayed in just the right way, with some awesome twists. The true nature of Dr. Doom’s plan won’t be known till exactly the right moment, making the game a pleasure to play.

You’ll start the game with your team consisting of Wolverine, Spidey, Captain America and Thor. The team can later be customized, allowing you to choose from 18 heroes at first, but heroes are later added when they turn in to join your cause. You’ll have control over basic stats of your hero, like health and energy too.

he game offers so many heroes with different abilities that you won’t get bored at all. Customization of characters makes the game more interesting, and the multiplayer feature is almost seamless.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has its share of downs too. The characters sometimes get too small on the PSP screen, and some customization options seem to contradict each other. Overall, it’s an awesome game for RPG and Marvel fans alike.

Marvel Trading Card Game

Posted on Nov 14, 2008 03:32:51 PM

The Marvel trading card game has been provided for the PSP by Upper deck entertainment in association with Konami. Resembling the Vs system which is one of Upper Deck’s most flexible, solid and robust systems, Marvel’s licensed TCG packs some of the most interesting and exciting features in its online representation which has been witnessing a multitude of activities.

For those who are not very experienced in similar TCG games earlier, this game may be a bit confusing at first glance. As you venture into playing this game, you will realize that this is b other with uniquely characterized cards. Cards are the arms with which they attack and try to deased on a whole lot of strategies. Played between two players, each player is required to attack thefeat each other until one of the players finds his or her points completely depleted.

There are different categories like equipment, twists in plot, characters and locations the cards are divided into. The main category character cards are used to attack opponents and the others are used as enhancements to aid characters in their battle by providing them with abilities.

Twists in the plots add to the excitement and challenge as you can use this option to perform various effects like forcing your opponent to discard his cards by buffing up the character cards. You can also create a host of fortune reversals during a single character clash by chaining plots twists together. As you start playing and learning the nuances of the game, you find yourself rooted to your place not wanting to give up at any stage.

Of course, luck plays a major role here as cards are draw at random from the deck. But strategy plays a major role too. Choosing the character you want to play with their different defense rating and attacks and placing them at the right place on the field plays an important role in your success.
It takes a little time and perseverance to get a hang of this game, but once you know how to go about it, no one can wean you away from the Marvel Trading Card Game and your favorite PSP.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Posted on Sep 18, 2008 01:13:36 PM

The work of superheroes never ends. As long as evil forces try to dominate the world, superheroes will have to put on their tight fancy clothes and set out to do battle. This is especially true for the Marvel superhero Spider-Man. Activision is going to launch this hero against the forces of evil again in October 2008, in this latest version entitled Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

This time there will be more ruthless enemies, more devastating action and tougher challenges, because Venom has returned to the city, and he is not alone. He has joined hands with the Symbiotes. The Marvel law enforcement agency, SHIELD has prevented the invasion from spreading, and the entire city is now cut off from the outside world. Spider-Man has to act quickly and fight against the villains and himself, before the Symbiotes transform him into the black Spider-Man one again.

All the characters that have been confirmed up until now include Black Cat, Kingpin, Luke Cage, Mary Jane Watson, Venom, Vulture, Wolverine and the Symbiotes. This new version will offer some of the unique and never-before-seen features. The fighting system in Spider-Man - Web of Shadows, for one, has been majorly enhanced. Now the player can chase enemies with the utmost acceleration and style. The Spiderman can make use of flagpoles in order to gain momentum apart, in addition to the traditional web swinging style. Another one of the game’s unique characteristics is how Spidey can take vertical flights and fight against the evildoers on the city walls. But this is not enough. There’s something even more interesting. Your Spidey can now change his suit any time, even during combat, in order to use the right combos and moves at the right time. So be ready for a new action fueled odyssey with Spider-Man.

Iron Man on PSP: Show ‘em the Fist, Brother.

Posted on May 14, 2008 03:05:29 AM

Show me a kid who isn’t naughty and I will show you a kid who doesn’t know of Marvel. You remember Marvel comics, don’t you? We even remember a movie being made on the effects these comics have on kids today – well, we aren’t discussing that topic right now.

We are onto something else! Iron Man with action-packed, edge-of-your-seat game play, produced by the Marvel studios, has been released and is said to be an all inclusive action thriller that can dump you into a world of action; previously only made possible by movies or comics. Now you can do even better and be part of the action instead of just witnessing the chaos.

Featuring explosive militaristic combat from the film, with loads of additional content created exclusively for the game, it is nothing short of immaculate non-stop entertainment on the move.

The Iron Man alone battles armies of fighter jets, military tanks, armored Super Villains and more. The players have the ability to channel the power to different parts of the Iron man’s suit (yes, he has one and you can see it for yourself), that would give you a range of attack modes in the iron mode – and you control everything (remember we were talking about you being in control here, this isn’t comics!)

Peppered with mayhem instilled battle-fields and a jaw-dropping combat sequences, the game almost feels like a movie, except here you are the director and protagonist. The challengers range from fairly simple to unbelievably unpredictable and even includes some elements that were not a part of the Movie.

What’s more, you can even make seamless transitions in your combat styles – fore and aft, ground to air. Move about anywhere you want to and do anything you ever wanted. The world is going to twist your game play in its favor and you get to be the Iron Man for a change. How is that for a role-play?
