PlayStation Portable Update: Here Comes the Firmware version 5.0

Posted on Oct 16, 2008 12:14:30 PM

Sony Computer Entertainment America has just announced that the new updated firmware for the PlayStation Portable will be launched this month. PSP fans will receive the firmware version 5.0., and PlayStation 3 fans will also be glad since they will be getting an update as well. The new PSP firmware 5.0 will allow PSP users to connect directly to the PlayStation Store, and then purchase and download a wide selection of media, including movies, games and demos. There is no need to transfer that data through the PlayStation 3 or PC either.

The new firmware offer many advantages to PSP users. Sony Entertainment has already increased the amount of downloadable PSP games and movies. A report from UK consumer website CVG reveals that the Sony Entertainment Japan will release all of its future UMD games as PS Store downloads. The first title to make the online debut will be ‘Destroy All Heroes 2’.

The firmware version 5.0 includes an onscreen QWERTY keyboard which makes web browsing much easier. In addition to that, it also contains a sleep timer, which can be used for shutting off the PSP during musical playback. The video out functionality has also improved a lot, supports interlace displays and allows classic PlayStation titles to play at full-screen size on the TV. The quality of the official headsets has improved as well. They feature a high quality mode, which, when activated, delivers clear and wide-band wireless voice communication.

According to Peter Dille, SCEA’s PlayStation Network Marketing SVP, ”These firmware updates keep both PS3 and PSP in lockstep with consumer expectations for gaming and entertainment, particularly the ability to download PSP games on-the-go, which is a functionality we know consumers can’t wait to get their hands on. As we approach our second anniversary with Sony PlayStation 3, it’s remarkable to look back at how much the system has evolved and improved, including its critical link to PSP that effectively extends these entertainment capabilities beyond the home.”

Who is Spiderman: Friend or Foe?

Posted on Aug 4, 2008 12:13:49 PM

Since childhood superheroes, like Superman, Batman, and of course Spider-man, have continued to fascinate us. But now our fascination has turned into three awesome and exciting flicks and even more video games. If you are a Spider-man fan then you wouldn’t have missed the movies, so why miss the video games? Now its time to enjoy playing as the animated Spider-man character and jumping, hanging, falling and fighting all at the press of a button. There are two or three Spider-man titles available, but the most exciting and interesting is doubtlessly Spiderman: Friend or Foe.

This awesome title runs on a brand new storyline, which is very distinct and different from previous titles. This storyline of the console Game really adds to the gameplay, as it is original, well told and gripping. In this version Spider-man is struggling to defeat some of his classic arch-nemeses. And guess who comes out to help him out? None other than the Green Goblin, because it’s actually hard for Spider-man to fight everyone off alone. Later Spidey is rescued by Nick Fury. Nick Fury rescues Spiderman because she wants him to assist with a brand new invasion. The most unbelievable aspect of the game is Spidey being supported by the other characters, which automatically adds a new dynamic and excitement to the title. All the characters are taken from the flick, and number around 12 in total. The surprise in the game is the Iron Fist who’s got his own comic lines and is also has a great presence on the screen. This marvelous title is better in terms of action when compared to the other Spider-man titles. A gamer can stick Spider-man on any corner and surface of the game, which entails practically limitless possibilities. The graphics, sound, story and gameplay are all highly immersive. If you are at all a fan of Spider-man, then there is no reason not to pick up this title for your PSP.

6 Steps for downloading Movies onto your PSP

Posted on May 14, 2008 03:25:32 AM

The PSP isn’t only for playing games - you can also watch movies while on the move that really make you grin forever. Think about all that time wasted waiting for people, buses, trains and planes. Now you always have something to do, while they the world takes its time.

If you have no inkling how to download PSP movies and watch them on your PSP, then this post is absolutely perfect for you. We also assume that you have a PC with a DVD drive (along with DVD burner software) and a few accessories for your PSP like a memory stick of at least 1 or 2 GB.

The first thing you need is a PSP Video Converter (you can get it for Free online) — this helps in converting your movie files into a PSP readable format.

Here is how you download the movie files onto your PSP

  1. Whether you are downloading the movie from the Internet or from a DVD, just do that on to your computer and put the files into a folder on the PC’s desktop.
  2. Run your PSP video converter and select the movie files and use your PSP video converter to save it in the MP4 format.
  3. Connect the PSP to your computer which will automatically detect the new connection and will designate a new drive letter. In some newer versions of operating systems, it even opens up a window with folders.
  4. Create a new folder (name it Music or Videos) wherever your PSP was designated. This new folder will actually be your PSP memory storage area.
  5. Drag and drop or copy/paste the converted mp4 movie files onto this new folder you have created above — all it to be transferred completely.
  6. Disconnect the cable appropriately and now you are ready to go.

It is that easy to dump movies or videos on to your PSP, which guarantees you non-stop entertainment in case you want to take a break from gaming or are in a situation — like in a moving bus — where you are better watching something passively rather than engaging in an action-packed game.

Sony should put more of their Multimedia Know-How into the PSP

Posted on May 8, 2008 12:18:26 PM

The PSP has the capability to do everything and while the not-so-discerning user is thrilled about this fact, there are chances that he has a dud in his hands. The Sony PSP can play games, movies, video clips, sound tracks (MP3), read books, connect to the internet, acts like a phone using Skype and a lot more. But the point here is not what it can and what it cannot do — rather, it’s how well it does these things.

If the user comments and reviews are anything to go by, the PSP does justice to the gaming part of its menu of “do-ables”. For everything else, there are really better devices that do a better job.

According to a report from The Washington post :

“Sony has often won big by thinking small. Portable gizmos such as the Walkman, the Discman and the Handicam helped make this company the consumer electronics power it is today. But until now, it hasn’t tried to run that play with its most successful product of the past decade, the PlayStation line of video-game machines”

Furthermore,

“As a portable game machine, it’s a peerless piece of work, combining sharp graphics, deep game play and easy online connectivity. As a multimedia gadget, however, it’s a dud”

On one hand Sony has for a long time done a great job with consumer electronics and has a brand image that beats rivals to death — the fact that the PSP can’t play videos that well or isn’t a great device to connect to the Internet is a trifle disappointing but is still a great alternative than to have multiple devices to do different things — look at the cost and the fact that you need to carry them all.

While you own the PSP, perhaps the only other device you might need is a cell phone ( to make local calls).
