The Good and the Bad: PSP

Posted on Jun 20, 2008 01:25:17 PM

With all the hype and popularity surrounding the Sony PSP, it has become latest news in the gaming industry. This handheld gaming console is a favorite among many popular personalities and is always a hit for the kids. It has been given the title of king of the hill by many of its fans. It has brought forward a new way to play games and watch movies and listen to some hard rocking music. It serves all purposes and solves most problems. Of all its huge success let us look at some of its pros and cons.

Pros

It is a sleek portable gaming system highlighted by an impressive wide-screen display and PS2-like graphics. It also boasts built-in WIFI, a web browser, the ability to play music and videos, as well as store images with the media manager. It comes in vibrant colors with a super fine metallic finish.

Cons

The Sony PSP multimedia functionality is underwhelming, especially for video, requiring an expensive memory card. The load times on the UMD (Universal Media Disc) games can be excessive. Ergonomically the device is OK but not great; as with most handheld gaming device, you’ll have to do a little finger stretching every 15 minutes or so to keep from cramping up. The problem with video playback is that you can only watch UMD videos on the PSP.

The bottom line is that Sony PSP elevates portable gaming to the next level, but its multimedia functionality falls short of its full potential. Thus, it will remain a number one in the gaming industry. It has left behind all the Nintendo DS Lite and DS competition. Sony PSP is a mixture of style, elegance and serves an ultimate gaming experience. It offers sophisticated graphically intensive games which will surely take your breath away!

It acts as a centralized hub to initiate and control the interaction between the PSP and PC. You can easily transfer music files, videos, pictures and other multimedia data from the PC to the PSP and vice-versa. Songs and movies from CDs and DVDs can also be extracted directly to the PSP with the help of Media Manager.

The new version of Media Manager i.e. v2.5 adds a lot of flexibility and comfort in synchronizing PSP and PC with each other. Version 2.5 supports Windows Vista. It allows you take backup of the games which are downloaded from the PlayStation store. A new file format FLAC is also supported in this new version. Media Manager 2.5 facilitates easy and quick management of PSP resources. You can easily shuffle the audio data or search a particular file in seconds. With Media Manager you can easily subscribe to web feeds and podcasts to get updates on latest stuff automatically. Backup of all the files and games can be taken easily by drag-n-drop. Media Player also prepares files for conversion even when the PSP is not connected to the PC. Apart form this, it is also helpful if you want to see how much free space is available on the memory stick duo card, transfer Microsoft Internet explorer favorites to the PSP or want to do high quality Sony AVC/AAC video encoding. You will find a built-in directory of popular feeds. The new Media Manager has a cool user friendly interface with large self explanatory icons and tabs. It is bifurcated into two parts. One of them shows the data from the desktop PC and the other one shows your PSP data. This new version of Media Manager is a great improvement over the previous ones.

Sony should put more of their Multimedia Know-How into the PSP

Posted on May 8, 2008 12:18:26 PM

The PSP has the capability to do everything and while the not-so-discerning user is thrilled about this fact, there are chances that he has a dud in his hands. The Sony PSP can play games, movies, video clips, sound tracks (MP3), read books, connect to the internet, acts like a phone using Skype and a lot more. But the point here is not what it can and what it cannot do — rather, it’s how well it does these things.

If the user comments and reviews are anything to go by, the PSP does justice to the gaming part of its menu of “do-ables”. For everything else, there are really better devices that do a better job.

According to a report from The Washington post :

“Sony has often won big by thinking small. Portable gizmos such as the Walkman, the Discman and the Handicam helped make this company the consumer electronics power it is today. But until now, it hasn’t tried to run that play with its most successful product of the past decade, the PlayStation line of video-game machines”

Furthermore,

“As a portable game machine, it’s a peerless piece of work, combining sharp graphics, deep game play and easy online connectivity. As a multimedia gadget, however, it’s a dud”

On one hand Sony has for a long time done a great job with consumer electronics and has a brand image that beats rivals to death — the fact that the PSP can’t play videos that well or isn’t a great device to connect to the Internet is a trifle disappointing but is still a great alternative than to have multiple devices to do different things — look at the cost and the fact that you need to carry them all.

While you own the PSP, perhaps the only other device you might need is a cell phone ( to make local calls).
