MX vs. ATV Unleashed now for the PSP Handheld

Posted on Dec 2, 2008 02:14:36 PM

There are many genres of games that haven’t found their way to the PlayStation Portable yet, but racing certainly isn’t one among them. There are tons of racing titles for the PSP, and MX vs. ATV Unleashed: On the Edge adds to that list. It is an extension of the original MX vs. ATV Unleashed that was released for current gen consoles last year.

The PSP version isn’t as perfect as everyone hoped it would be, but it still has some amazing stuff in it that will keep you gaming for a long, long time. Any Motocross or ATV fan will tell you that this game is amazing to play, and will keep you entertained for a long time to come.

The tracks are a pleasure to ride on, and you’ll find that developers Rainbow studios have captured every part of the real ATV experience and shoved it into a PSP in MX vs. ATV: On the Edge. Tracks are almost the same ones featured on the console version, with the exception of eight custom tracks built for the PSP exclusively.

The game features free roam in the countryside as well as practice circuits, and some amazing races with worthy AI opponents which will get your adrenaline pumping.

On the edge is quite pleasing visually, and has great visuals for a PSP title. Riders and their bikes are animated and modeled quite well, and environment has been detailed quite well, with an exception to the ground, which could have been textured better.

The game faces some problems when it comes to presentation, like poor loading times and lack of any type of auto save feature, and no prompt to manually save either.

The game is provides a lot of fun gameplay and tons of excitement, but the presentation faults will cost. Overall experience when you’re actually playing the game is brilliant, with some great track designs and rider animations. This is a must have title for all motocross and ATV fans alike, and it’s one of the better games in the PSP library of racing games, which isn’t exactly a small one. IF you’re willing to give the game enough time to load, this game is for you.

Race Off Road with Ford on the PSP

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 09:49:30 AM

Excellent racing games don’t need any introduction and the same holds true with Ford Racing: Off Road. The game is highly appreciated by both gamers and critics. The game manages to deliver in each and every element necessary for any exciting and thrilling racing game.

The natural and realistic graphics deceive you into thinking you are really driving and not just playing a game. Each and every texture on the vehicles is in so much detail that you can even point out a nut or a bolt. For the handheld PSP this is quite an accomplishment. The sound and music completes the graphics and is also surprisingly good. The games, also known as Landrover Offroad, includes some rocking electric guitar sounds which support the excitement and thrill perfectly. Now that we’ve covered the game’s appearance and sound we should move onto the most important part, namely, the gameplay.

The first 15-20 minutes require a bit of struggle, due to the difficulty in learning the controls, but afterwards it is nothing but smooth sailing. In this spectacular title you’ll also be accountable for the camera movement at some intervals, which can also make things slightly confusing. The title takes you off road, which means you’re not there to race on those smooth, speedy roads but on wild, crazy, and aggressive tracks. You’ll experience racing in the deserts, and go through water and ice. This is the real meaning of off road. It gives you that unbelievable feel as if you’re driving yourself and managing the steering. There’s no background story involved but in the main mode you’re set targets in each level. You’ll come across some spectacular range of targets of various difficulties. Off Road is an superbly designed racing game, and even you can master the controls it is definitely worth investigating further.

PSP goes Off Road

Posted on May 14, 2008 10:29:04 AM

While the games available for PSP fans aren’t coming out at the pace they ought to, there is another problem regarding game quality. Although some games are incredibly popular on the PSP, some of them have to struggle to up their own rankings.

Off Road, as the name suggest, should have lead you to believe that you would be sitting behind monster truck-like SUVs and 4×4s while raging through tough-to-maneuver tracks, but the game will disappoint you even before you switch gears — the tracks are rather neatly done and the only difficulty you might actually have to face while cruising along is wondering where the difficulty is.

Pocketgamer.co.uk neatly sums up the disappointment in the following manner:

“Several key factors ensure the races are incredibly dull. First, there are the tracks. Rather than ferociously pot-holed and pitted surfaces capable of snapping axles, you get tame freeways of different textured mush. You can guess that the green stuff is grass, beige bits are mud and the blue strips water mainly because that’s what you’d expect to be there, rather than by the way it affects the handling significantly.”

And finally,

“The reason it’s hard to be positive about Off Road is that even when it works and there are no gripes as such, it’s still a horribly average experience, almost as though there’s been a concerted effort to produce mediocrity. Yes, at £19.99 it’s a budget game but that shouldn’t be an excuse to create something that’s only memorable when it irritates, especially when there’s numerous quality driving games out there that can be picked up for less these days.”

Off Road is seriously off track and it is a wonder if anyone will actually pick it up. The racers seem to be more interested in bring up your fender to meet theirs or to damage your car more than anything else; the last thing they would like to do is to race.
