Spore: Coming to the PSP or not?

Posted on Mar 13, 2009 07:01:41 PM

A PSP version of the highly anticipated PC game Spore was confirmed way back in 2006. Now, years later, the company is silent. Although we have seen Spore on the Nintendo DS, that version is actually completely different than its PC origin. Really, the fact that the game has yet to make its way to the PSP is quite logical, seeing as even some beefed up PC systems had problems playing the game smoothly; so we can hardly be able to expect the Playstation Portable to handle it. Nevertheless, a promise is a promise, and until a Spore PSP version is officially denied, we can keep hoping. In the mean, we’ll offer a look at the PC game that is causing all the hype.

As you play Spore on the PC, you assume the role of as a microbe, and go through five stages ranging from microbiotic to the intergalactic. You have just two choices – you kill or not. As a microbe with teeth, you have a choice of killing of just being a vegetarian. As you go through the process of evolution, you evolve to dry land from the primordial soup. Here again, you have a choice between killing or befriending things by singing little songs to them.

As a society is formed with important decisions such as the kind of buildings to have in the first village, your choice is to kill or feed tangles of mouths and legs with plates of oranges. As you move on to a civilized location, your choice is between building machines that kill or maraca factories.

Surprisingly, the non violent aspect of this game is extremely interesting, in fact, even more interesting than killing a creature by just clicking on it. As the lizard plays dead for your amusement, copy a bipedal lizard with many fangs to show that you are not different. Make a bag of eyes your bitch by dancing for it.

There are five addictive and simple sub-games offering players with a stream of new and exciting stuff. Excitement is offered not by swords but with body parts. For instance, you can inspect a skeleton on the beach to evolve a new beak. You can electrify your body by eating a blue, feral kangaroo. Each time you befriend or kill, you earn a DNA point which you can use for mutation.

Mutation process again offers fun and excitement. Have hours of fun designing the most awesome demented creatures and try to animate them with the game. Make it dance, eat, fight and walk, even mate. Creating species is fun and extremely addictive. In fact the Spore PC/Mac version starts with one of your germ species crashes into a cracked open meteor in the sea. You have to flee from spiky, nasty and big things in the water. However, as you eat a lot, your creature swells enough to make your huge hunter a small prey.

Dungeon Siege Throne of Agony on the PSP

Posted on Nov 25, 2008 12:58:02 PM

Dungeon siege isn’t a series that’s new to the gaming world, far from it. First out on the PC as Dungeon Siege, the role player game grew popular in no time at all, and has made its impact on today’s gaming world.

Dungeon Siege I and II were PC titles, with quite an interesting story and gameplay. Now moving to the PlayStation Portable, the story continues on with Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony. Throne of Agony takes off where Dungeon Siege II ends, continuing the story from there.

Of course, if you happened to be a hack ‘n slash fan with a PSP, you really wouldn’t have many choices here. Dungeon Siege is one of those titles, and it lives up to its name, being a great entertainer.

SuperVillain Studios took the PC version of this game and converted all its elements into a portable form and brought it to the PSP, doing a pretty good job too. The gameplay the Dungeon Siege - Throne of Agony PSP version is largely based on the gameplay of the original Dungeon Siege; the game will be a pleasure for old time fans. It also encourages new players, with a few critical changes made to the gameplay system.

This makes Throne of Agony feel like an extended version of its PC predecessors, with improved features, but still retains the charm and presentation of the older games, making it truly pleasurable to play.

One major change is that the click-to-attack methods are gone. Now, instead of clicking on an enemy and watching your hero attack him, you’ll have to manually execute each blow, making the combat factor more dynamic and enjoyable. You’ll also have complete control of all your character’s moves and spells through the analog stick.

At the beginning, you can choose between being a Ranger, Fighter or Mage, with each type being totally different in game. It also involves secondary characters in the form of pets, selection of which is equally important. Gaining experience through the game leads to upgrades of pretty much everything.

Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony certainly lives up to its name, with some fast hack ‘n slash action, some smart AI enemies to deal with, and some awesome quests. Add in some great looking spells and you have a great game that is a must have for all hack-‘n-slash fans.

Pipemania Revived!

Posted on Apr 15, 2008 02:26:29 PM

Pipemania – it might say nothing to you. But the game principle is familiar. Various Pipemania clones, with the same type of pipe focused gameplay, have been available for the computer since the DOS days. At any rate, the idea of stress-filled pipe building is so encouraging that Empire Interactive has undertaken it upon themselves to revive the series.

The title, which should come with five different game modes, seven settings, and more than 70 levels, is set to be released for the Wii, PS2, PC and PSP. The only question is whether a reworked version of the old age principle can thrill today’s gamers. Resuscitating Rainbow Island, for example, turned out rather poorly, while the new edition of Final Fantasy was also a letdown. One, not unimportant reason, is that many better games and clones have been released since the time of the originals. The name will help little if the gameplay is outdated. Nevertheless, Pipemania could turn out to be a fun low budget title worth picking up.
