Blood Bowl Impressions: PSP turn based Strategy Game due out in Q2 2009

Posted on Apr 2, 2009 08:57:18 AM

Developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive, Blood Bowl is an interesting and interactive sports game. Teams of lizardmen, dwarves, orcs and other fantasy creatures are pitted against each other on the playing fields. Apart from scoring touchdowns, they are also very likely to be killed on the playing field. In fact, this game feels more like a war game than a sport.

This game will be offered on PSP as a turn based strategy game. During launch, Blood Bowl will come featured with team types numbering eight. These include the ogres, rat, treemen, trolls, minotaurs, etc. According to Focus Home Interactive, more teams such as the dark elf and the undead are likely to be added.

As you play this interesting game, you find that it resembles the classic mode of the tabletop game providing comprehensive information on the reasons behind your player’s failure or success. For example, even a small action such as making your troll pick up and throw the goblin with the ball at the opposition team needs a bit of luck. This risky move can even result in the troll eating up his team mate as hunger gets the better of him.

Game is kept at a fairly even pace with each turn lasting not more than four minutes. Intuitive controls make it easier for you to master the skill of handling the game. It is also a welcome development to have another turn-based strategy game released for the PSP, since aside from Mytran Wars PSP and a few other titles, the genre is decidingly underrepresented. In Blood Bowl you start off with designing and choosing your team formation and then just click on the player to move them and also on the square where you want them to go. You can then choose the option you want your player to perform.

You can reposition the camera wherever you want to when the match is on. You can zoom in to get a clear view of your opponent getting attacked or zoom out to get an overall tactical view of the field. PSP version of this interesting game is in 3D and comes with a wireless multiplayer mode. Scheduled to be released in June 2009, this game is sure to bring some entertaining moments to your favourite PSP.

Hammerin Hero Preview: Get ready to go Smash Everything

Posted on Mar 12, 2009 02:49:32 PM

Side scrollers had their moments of triumph in the gaming industry, and they had their share of great games, but people thought it was time to move on, with all the 2.5D and 3D games available for handheld consoles. Well, the Japanese game publisher Altus proved everyone wrong by bringing back side- scrolling to the PSP with Hammerin’ Hero. This game is super addictive and will keep you hooked to the console for quite some time.

You play as Genzo Tamura, a young carpenter, who sets out to stop the evil carpenter practices of the Kuromoku-gumi. You have various levels to complete, each complete with its own boss. Stages don’t go on for very long, but they sure are fun, and are filled with fun collectibles. It also contains that same wacky Japanese animation found in other Atlus games like Bomberman Land PSP. The Gameplay is Hammerin Hero is extremely easy to grasp and get used to. There are five basic moves, Jump, crouch, light attack, special attack and heavy attack.

Your job is to kill every enemy in the path till you reach the boss of the level. You’ll start off with a giant hammer to knock down enemies, but as the game progresses, you’ll get new jobs, and with new jobs come new weapons and new special attacks. For instance, if you take up a DJ job, you can bonk enemies with a boombox.

You visit Kanna, a childhood friend, before each level, to get a bento lunch. Each bento lunch gives you the ability to change to a different job within a single stage. You can ask for random bentos to get multipliers, power-ups and boosters among other things.

Stages are also filled with civilians who have their own share of worries. You can choose an appropriate job to do away with civilian worries to make them happy and they will send thank-you notes in return.

The game also features multiplayer, where players play side by side over a wireless network to finish stages.

There are many ways to get extra points, but that’s left for you to discover. The April 7th North America release date will be much awaited for, as this promising title should bring back memories of old, but great side scrollers such as double dragon.

R-Type Command your PSP - a Preview

Posted on May 6, 2008 11:47:09 AM

Role-playing games are fun because you suddenly control and rule the roost. You call the shots and you will bear the consequences – for once you are really in control and bereft of anything to hold you back – unshackled bliss.

Bydo is the name of a mysterious alien race which is engaging in a relentless, ruthless war against humans and the planet responds by sending fighters continuously into the Bydo space, never to be heard from again. Mankind rests all its hopes on a valiant commander who is packed up and sent to fight against the Evil Bydo race. With rapidly depleting resources and manpower, the commander is forced to make do with whatever is left and to economize his resources to wage a successful battle against the superior race. Not only that, he has to find his back to mother somehow.

Coming from a highly acclaimed franchise, the game is all strategy and role play rolled into one. With novel touches like the ability to control even the Bydo forces while they launch their war on earth and having a lot of units (more than a hundred), the commander is at liberty to choose the very best and prepare them for battle. What’s more, you can even upgrade and replace your existing units with new ones.

The games gives you an option to play with in the multi-player option using the PSP’s wireless communication protocol or use the ad hoc mode to go head-to head against a friend. Although it might be a little daunting to the first time player, things will get enjoyably more familiar as time goes by and then this PSP game will never cease to deliver.

This turn-based strategy and shooter game is not going to disappoint its fans as the game promises a thrilling time what with the shooters being tough and devastating – the challenge only gets bigger.
