Star Wars: Lethal Alliance – the Somewhat Generic Game still shines at Points

Posted on Dec 17, 2008 10:49:43 AM

For all the Star Wars fans, Lethal Alliance is a treat. With exhilarating and challenging on-rails levels, diverse and fun elements which are co-operative and fluid acrobatics, this game provides for action that is unmatched.

An extremely enjoyable addition to the range of star war games, Lethal Alliance resembles Prince of Persia in its acrobatics and has a strong shooting gameplay. Generic level designs and certain other flaws are overshadowed by the range of variety integrated in Star Wars - Lethal Alliance. Even though it is quite tough to get past the targeting system, the shooter is accessible enough to be appreciated by the ardent fans of Star wars. Characterization and diverse action adequately compensate for any drawback.

There are a host of Star Wars character cameos and the action is set between Episodes III and IV. The main character Twi’Lek Rianna Saren is not a Jedi but an original character. In the form of a mercenary, she assists the rebellion. The game of Lethal Alliance is driven more by character than based on any solid story line.

Action revolves around Riana and her companion Zeeo. This odd collaboration carries the story along in an interesting manner. In fact, it is this partnership that makes a difference in the otherwise dull game of third person shooting. Certain exciting collaborative moves are possible now with the help of Zeeo.

As a player, you can bash up the stormtroopers using Zeeo as a boomerang. You can send the lasers right back to your enemies with the help of Zeeo’s energy shield. You can even perform a cartwheel in slow motion by grabbing him. Other interesting things you can perform with Zeeo’s help include crawling into wall ducts, slicing into data ports, etc.

A cinematic touch is provided in combats where you enter the bullet time automatically with certain skills. Though occasionally frustrating, the moves are fluid and highly satisfying. Rianna moves around by somersaulting, tumbling and leaping from one point of anchor to another.

You can enjoy some exhilarating and exciting moments with Zeeo as he zips around taking control of turrets. Star Wars Lethal Alliance is enjoyment and fun all the way on your favorite PSP.

The Sims 2: Pets available on the handheld PSP

Posted on Dec 16, 2008 10:38:21 AM

Sims 2 enthusiasts are sure delighted with the announcement of the release of its expansion Sims 2 Pets by EA. Sure to be a repeat of a standalone Sims 2 version, there are a few impressions that has trickled in regarding the features of this most expected release.

In this game, you do not get to control the pets directly. As with the previous games, you effectively manipulate human Sim character lives. The Sims 2 - Pets starts off on a different tone putting you on an exciting track. As a player you first scan a community, analyze and decide on how you want to play. You have the option of choosing an empty lot to build from scratch or play with an already existing family-in-progress. You then go on to create your pets with the help of the pet creation system.

After selecting your set of loyal pals from a choice of over forty pure breeds of dogs and cats, you can mess around with them to your heart’s content, including mixing, blending and swapping them. At the onset, of course, you choose the gender. Then you go on to shape the body of the pet by defining the color, fashion, head, name and personality. This should be the most interesting part of the game, especially for a Sim fan.

Traits can be defined with the help of a wide range of options. With the help of a tab called “fashion” you can choose from a range of shoes, bandanas and collars for your pet. Your creation can be morphed in size and shape with the help of the head and body tabs. Personality can be defined with qualities like hyper, lazy, nice, snooty, doofus, smart, chill, aggressive, etc. After you are satisfied with your pet, you actually start playing the game.

Along with the human Sims as in the originals, here you are required to keep track of the needs of your pets too. You will even have to monitor their chewing and scratching traits as ignoring this will lead to a devastation of your flower garden or expensive furniture. PSP version allows you to take your pet shopping to the town square to purchase stuff like toys, food, etc in three prominent shops namely pet emporium, toy store and a bakery.

Snoopy vs. the Red Baron: Intense Air Combat

Posted on Dec 16, 2008 10:25:27 AM

Air combat enthusiasts cannot resist buying this game. The intensity of the combat is exciting and thrilling and the game is loaded with fun filled missions. The game features solid, arcade style air combat.

The feel and atmosphere of animated cartoons is brought to life with the help of musical scores and cinemas. Charming voice acting for characters add to the element of fun. Snoopy, as we all know, has always been highly fascinated with air battles in World War I. Pet beagle of Charlie Brown is famous for imagining himself to be a popular flying ace adept at attacking the legendary Red Baron in dogfights.

Namco-Bandai games offer this exciting scenario in the all new video game Snoopy Vs the Red Baron. As a player, you can take control of aircraft like Sopwith Camel to go on missions. The game is obviously more cute than other flight sim games like Ace Combat X, however, it still contains plenty of dogfighting action. Missions in the Snoopy game involve you in the middle of war time action with your favorite Peanut characters and shooting down hordes of enemy planes. This is an ideal game for kids with all the excitement without the bloodshed. As you shoot a plane to bits, characters parachute to safety. This does not in any way hinder the intensity of action making this game ideal for older people too.

Game starts with a scene where Snoopy is fast asleep over his dog house. As Lucy and Charlie Brown walk over and question Snoopy on his World War I action dreams, our journey through Snoopy’s fantastic dreams commence. As the ace WWI, you get to control the actions of Snoopy. You are taken through Allied army missions numbering twenty two. To free Europe from the powerful grip of the tyrannical Red Baron is the objective of the game.

At the end of missions, animated video scenes appear. The tried and true concepts along with innovative experiences make this game one of the most thrilling combat games. The overall look and feel of the game is interesting with the twenty two missions being split into multiple segments. Shooting down enemy planes, sinking gunships and blimps are the standard mission activities.

With a host of familiar characters from Peanuts assisting you, you can have non stop fun with this game on your favorite PSP.

Shrek Smash n Crash Racing

Posted on Dec 15, 2008 06:43:23 PM

Shrek is all set to take the kid’s world by storm, yet again. As usual, a barrage of games descends on children following the stupendous success of the movie. Shrek games, as we have seen, have dominated the world of games for years, with over fifteen games on a multitude of platforms.

Activision continues to satisfy hungry consumers by cranking out the hugely popular game. Kart racing and Shrek, a combination that is sure to set our blood roaring is on the way. Fun, thrill and entertainment all the way is what is Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing is all about.

A fat ogre Shrek, his pet friend donkey Eddie Murphy and of course the musketeer cat who is absolutely adorable form a team to provide gamers hours of enjoyment. This game has been designed by Activision in such a way that it is half arcade racer and half party game, similar in features to the Mario Kart clone, going back to the GBA roots.

As a player, you are given the option of selecting Shrek characters. Cast is usual of course and with the inspiration of the movie around you, you can hit locations numbering up to twelve to race around in style. The hazards in Shrek Smash’n'Crash Racing come in the form of encounters with inhabitants, with the scenario bordering on the fairy tale. As you win over them, you collect modifiers and other items used for defense or offense. You can use the speed boosts to race ahead in this tried and tested generic method.

Interestingly, characters are used for riding using animals from Dreamworks universe. This is way better than just shoving them into a go kart and watching a drab race. For example, it is fun watching a dragon being ridden by a Donkey or a bull being ridden by Puss n’ Boots.

Solid design and gameplay takes this game a step ahead of its earlier counterparts. Tracks numbered twelve are exciting, each from a different fairy land with their own hooks in the race. Levels also feature exciting multiple routes.

Disadvantages include the slow loading times and speed. However, the other exciting features far over ride the sense of disappointment making this one of the most sensational and exciting game on PSP yet.

R-Types: A great FPS for the PSP

Posted on Dec 13, 2008 02:17:52 PM

R-Types was one of the best shooter games available for the PSOne. It had its competition, but also had some great design and strategy for that generation of games. It was a very action intensive game on the PSOne, requiring you to concentrate on what your enemy is doing to destroy them. Just random shooting and moving isn’t going to achieve anything.

R-Types is actually a collection of two arcade games, the 16-bit shooters, R-Type and R-Type II. Both games, thankfully, let you continue as many times as you want, which is actually a great thing, considering it takes a few hours of intensive gameplay to get past just the first few levels. There are power ups to make gameplay interesting as well. The controls are simple. It is a side scrolling game, with a single fire button, which can be held to charge the shot, and a rapid- fire button, which saves your thumb from any button mashing damage.

There’s also the Force button, which releases or summons, if you haven’t got it already, a force ball, which, when released acts as a separate satellite all by itself, and as a shield to your R- Fighter. There are just the right amounts of power ups, to increase your speed, upgrade your guns and your Force ball. These power ups don’t upgrade you too much and make the game too easy either.

While this game was great on the PSOne, and ever there only for R-Type fans, it seems a bit outdated now, to be on the PSP. It is available on the PSN for download, at a price, of course. Despite having a multiplayer mode, it is restricted to two players, so it is not really an online game. The game has a whole new level of difficulty, but hardcore gamers will find that it is worth playing. It is a great addition for those gamers looking for a blast from the past.
