Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep on the PSP

Posted on Mar 27, 2009 04:51:37 PM

Kingdom Hearts from Square Enix has so far been all about Riku and Sora who are on a Kingdom adventure holding a keyblade. Birth by sleep for the PlayStation Portable is a completely different turn off from the original story line. This game starts with talking about keyblade warriors before Riku and Soru’s time. Aqua, Ventus and Terra are three apprentices of keyblade. Game play and visuals are excellent in this game and are sure to add to the enjoyment.

At the demo event, it was possible to check out playing as both Ventus and as Terra. Terra’s demo was all about teaching users how the battle has to be played. Enemies who surrounded Terra at the start of the game are completely different from the previous versions. Enemies themselves are referred to in Japanese as Anbaasu which in English means Unbirth. On his way to the Enchanted Kingdom castle, Terra has to fight various Anbaasu of different sizes. Boss of the castle is a huge machine red in colour.

Controls in Birth by Sleep are user friendly. An interesting additional feature in this game is the command meter. As you attack enemies you find your command meter going up. When it fills up, you get to play the command mode with extra firepower. Other interesting modes include the thunderbolt and the fireblazer.

Ventus’ demo referred to as the Castle of Dreams was not as straightforward as the Terra’s demo. Here it is possible to avoid combats but requires player to extensively search for items to carry the storyline forward. Go through the game jumping on yarns and books. Forks on the walls can be used as a springboard to jump to high places. Additional techniques that cannot be found in the Terra demo include walking rather than dashing around especially while falling from high places by tilting the analog stick a little.

Solid gameplay and excellent graphics are sure to add to the excitement and fun this game has to offer. The story might be completely different from earlier titles like Kingdom Hearts 2 PS2, but the animation and graphics are rather similar. Slated to be released in 2009 in Japan, Birth by Sleep is sure to provide hours of fun on your favourite PSP.

The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion on the PSP

Posted on Jan 19, 2009 07:05:11 PM

With an interesting storyline, a lot of characters and good artwork and animation, this game is one of the good role playing games developed by Falcom. As the name suggests, Legend of Heroes is all about great warriors and mighty battles. However, the main characters who are pretty young do not gain prominence until you complete hours of play.

Slight problems show up in dialogue delivery which has been literally translated from the Japanese version. There are times when the player is confused and does not know what he is supposed to do next. However, a solid lengthy gameplay and detailed and in depth attention paid to the characters, this game is sure to provide players with a lot of enjoyment and fun.

Story revolves around Avin whose sister is Eimelle. A surprise attack separates him from Eimelle and as he enters adulthood, he decides to embark on his mission to locate his only surviving member of the family. Mile is timid but level headed and he assists Avin with his mission.

The adventure they encounter on the way to their goal is filled with surprises and twists. They enter the world of El Phildin, where darkness and followers of light are preparing for a combat. Story takes Avin and Mile through various fights and encounters with villains and monsters. As they overcome each one, they gain valuable experience points, acquire new skills and get hold of better weapons and equipment.

Character portraits are well drawn out and graphics are noteworthy. The Japanese style is very similar to other Falcom games, such as Gurumin. The character’s development in Legend of Heroes is logical and crisp, which makes this game very enjoyable. Various fights and combats are exciting though some of the turns and twists in the story are quite predictable.

In the initial stages, the encounters are not so tough, but as the game progresses, you find that fights are not so easy to win. Characters that are helping you in your mission have the ability to cast spells, attack, trade hits with opponents, etc.

As you are successful in your regular attacks, you collect certain deadly and unique skills by charging your power meter. On the whole, this long drawn and interesting Falcom game provides for loads of fun for enthusiastic players on your favourite PSP.

Dungeon Siege Throne of Agony on the PSP

Posted on Nov 25, 2008 12:58:02 PM

Dungeon siege isn’t a series that’s new to the gaming world, far from it. First out on the PC as Dungeon Siege, the role player game grew popular in no time at all, and has made its impact on today’s gaming world.

Dungeon Siege I and II were PC titles, with quite an interesting story and gameplay. Now moving to the PlayStation Portable, the story continues on with Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony. Throne of Agony takes off where Dungeon Siege II ends, continuing the story from there.

Of course, if you happened to be a hack ‘n slash fan with a PSP, you really wouldn’t have many choices here. Dungeon Siege is one of those titles, and it lives up to its name, being a great entertainer.

SuperVillain Studios took the PC version of this game and converted all its elements into a portable form and brought it to the PSP, doing a pretty good job too. The gameplay the Dungeon Siege - Throne of Agony PSP version is largely based on the gameplay of the original Dungeon Siege; the game will be a pleasure for old time fans. It also encourages new players, with a few critical changes made to the gameplay system.

This makes Throne of Agony feel like an extended version of its PC predecessors, with improved features, but still retains the charm and presentation of the older games, making it truly pleasurable to play.

One major change is that the click-to-attack methods are gone. Now, instead of clicking on an enemy and watching your hero attack him, you’ll have to manually execute each blow, making the combat factor more dynamic and enjoyable. You’ll also have complete control of all your character’s moves and spells through the analog stick.

At the beginning, you can choose between being a Ranger, Fighter or Mage, with each type being totally different in game. It also involves secondary characters in the form of pets, selection of which is equally important. Gaining experience through the game leads to upgrades of pretty much everything.

Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony certainly lives up to its name, with some fast hack ‘n slash action, some smart AI enemies to deal with, and some awesome quests. Add in some great looking spells and you have a great game that is a must have for all hack-‘n-slash fans.

The New Picture of Yggdra Union

Posted on Oct 6, 2008 01:52:24 PM

Originally a Game Boy Advance game, Yggdra Union is a new game for the PSP. It is an interesting game with lots of complexity and playability, which will grab your attention for at least a pretty long time. Based on the same features, you can call it a new, more polished version of the two-year-old game.

In addition to pleasant graphics and impressive audio, the Yggdra Union also involves some really engrossing gameplay. The voice acting in the game is outstanding, and really helps you immerse yourself more in the story. All the major story sequences have an audio base in English as well as Japanese. This is great for enhancing the plot and making the gameplay much more enchanting. Although the story is a bit lengthier than the original Gameboy Advance one, you will find no time to think in between the game’s consecutive twists. The introduction of new characters and interesting plots was designed to, and has succeeded in, keeping boredom at bay.

The story is based on the princess Yggdra’s efforts to reunite her descended world. As a role-playing game, the player enters the shoes of the young princess and forms a team of brave folks. You and your companions have to fight all those dark foes that frequently obstruct your way. To support your mission, there is a great device in the form of a “holy sword”, promising to punish all those who have harmed your natives. The sword guides you towards your destination. On your part, you need to answer some questions about the sword’s specialty and also about your insight vision. The turn-based battles are simple, but really helpful in maintaining the game’s flow.

The intervals provided in battle are also a great time to plan strategy and get ahead. You are also provided with a preparation time before jumping in the battlefield, the most important aspect of which is creating unions. Altogether, the game is quite interesting and a fun to play. Even if you played the original game, this one a worth a look, since it redefines so many of the original elements in Yggdra.

APE QUEST for the PSP

Posted on Sep 1, 2008 01:04:23 PM

Ape Quest is a combination of a mini game with some added RPG elements. An RPG (Role Playing Game) is a game where the player takes the role of the character. The gamer only decides on the actions of their characters. Role playing games are quite interactive, exciting and of course popular.

The game is based on the story where the king of Toqsica sends the prince to visit the place in which the seal that seizes the Apetron, a group of vicious and terrifying apes, is located. The respected knight D’ Apetagnan accompanies the prince as well. However, the prince impulsively eats the banana shaped seal, again giving the Apetron free access to the kingdom. The prince then has to save his kingdom from this curse.

In this game the gamer plays the role of the prince. The player has to meet up with the group of traveling merchants and adventurers who will become the warriors of the Ape Team. The player will also have to fight monsters and undertake a lot of quests by exploring dungeons. The player will have to plan all routes or paths to be taken very carefully, because once taken, the player can neither stop in between nor can he change the path.

The game is all about destroying various monsters throughout the story. These can be anything from lions, wolves, crabs, snakes and other creatures. They can erupt any time along the path to distract and trouble the prince. The player has to destroy these opponents, thereby earning points, also referred as chips, which are of great help later on in the game. While hardly of the caliber of RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or Elder Scrolls Travels, this RPG nonetheless offers a rather enjoyable, albeit generic, gaming experience.
