PSP rakes in great sales beating Nintendo’s Wii this April

Posted on May 19, 2008 10:46:47 AM

April turned out to be a great month for Sony and that’s good news for all the PSP fans. The hardware sales in Japan have been steadily growing and that makes PSP settle at the very top of the “must-buy” list and shows no signs of abating.

Another piece of related news that might elate the PSP community is the fact that the PSP has sold twice as much as Nintendo’s Wii units.

Pocket gamer had a round-up of the statistics from various sources:

” In the same month Mario Kart Wii hit shop shelves and instantly topped the software charts, PSP was still outselling the console by 2:1. In total, the handheld sold a massive 380,697 units during April, while Wii sold 187,121 and DS 169,911”

And further:

” However it’s achieved the sales figures though, the result is a console with a fast-increasing user base that publishers - especially in Japan - can hardly overlook. Whether PSP can achieve the same levels of success in the west over the coming months remains to be seen, but outselling Nintendo in the month a new Mario Kart game is released is certainly a promising start “

A few great games available to be played on the PSP and the fact that it had long since garnered a huge community of game lovers has made the PSP a hot favorite with many fans. The fact that the PSP also proves to be highly versatile and has the ability to do much more than mere gaming, including a horde of services, can make the PSP truly an indisputable leader among all the gaming devices currently available!

The PSP game Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G Hits the 2 million mark with a bang

Posted on May 19, 2008 10:40:32 AM

The PSP is roaring like never before and keeps ringing these bells of new milestones — whether by the virtue of some kind of miracle or due to the fact that one of their games seems to have reached the point of no return.

The Japanese game Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is on a winning streak with an unbelieving, and relentless show of sales from the time of its launch. It has now crossed the 2 million mark and is showing no signs of abating. Of course, we have our Grand Theft Auto, which is also busy making money and breaking records – but this Japanese game is exclusively and only available for the PSP.

Are there chances that this game is hyped, lacks substance and moves with a false momentum? There have been some comments that the game has a lot to do with the performance of the others in the multiplayer mode there are some who don’t really buy the hype.

There have been some interesting view points about how the Japanese have different tastes and the success might not ring any bells in the US or UK.

Although the game has received mixed reactions from different people, most others are generally euphoric about the game. I loved it myself when I did try my hand on this one and it really isn’t an arcade game. It is arduous; it will test your skills and you will be hooked nonetheless.

PSP Still Sells Strongly in Japan, even better than ever

Posted on May 8, 2008 12:29:21 PM

Here’s some news – PSP is still a big name in Japan and is really raking in the cash, if the recently reported numbers are anything to go by. No one expected the PSP to be as much of a hit as it is now. It might be surprising to note that the Sony PS3 on the other hand isn’t doing nearly as well as the PSP.

For the record, PSP units sold more than even the hugely popular DS lite.

Stating verbatim from the psp.ign.com

“The PSP continues to dominate hardware over in Japan. For the week covering April 14 to April 20, Media Create’s sales charts put Sony’s portable at 85,421 units, besting the DS Lite’s 44,551 units and the Wii’s 44,241 units.

It wasn’t all good news for Sony, though. The PS3 fell yet again, down to 7,438 units for the week. The PS2 dropped down to 6,545 units, with the Xbox 360 completing Team Low Sales with 1,076 units.

The PSP’s success is, of course, attributed to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold an additional 123,855 units over the week. Capcom has already shipped two million units for the title, which will likely soon overtake its predecessor, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, in overall sales.”

So is the success of PSP attributed to the success of Monster Hunter in any way? You bet it is. The numbers the PSP and other gaming devices are selling at is a testimony to the fact that games have been hugely popular among teenagers. An entire industry thrives on this. The success of Xbox, PS1, 2 and 3 is always attributed to the popularity of their games. Games are not reality; games depict violence and games are often said to be the release for all kinds of perverse desires people seem to have; does the increase in games mean that more and more people are craving for the unrealistic release?

From New York to Moscow: The Sims sell more than 100 Million Units

Posted on Apr 17, 2008 10:23:21 AM

From New York to Moscow. That’s pretty damn far. So far, in fact, that Google maps can’t even calculate an optimal travel route. But the incredible distance between the two cities is the same as if all the Sims boxes sold were queued up together in one straight line. Because the Sims have sold over 100 million units, counting all the expansions. Which means that on average every third American or every seventh European would possess a copy of the Sims. At any rate, the series is clearly the most successful game of all time, not even Grand Theft Auto comes close.

EA can of course be thrilled over their success, because, as the New York Times reports, the Sims have brought in around 4 billion dollars, or around 500 million per year. One, not unimportant, reason for the success is that the game is disproportionately beloved by children and women; something most other games cannot begin to contend. On the other hand, the PSP editions, namely Pets and Stranded, have received less success and love. But to be honest, the PSP is simply not the right console for the executing the “real” Sims experience. That’s why we can get even more excited over Sims 3 which has been announced for next year and will allow people to move around their neighbourhood for the first time. So the successor to the 100-million-boxes-from-New York-to-Moscow-game has been secured, which is sure to make many more people happy. Who knows, maybe it will be from New York to Dubai soon.

PSP sales continue to boom in Japan!

Posted on Apr 16, 2008 10:31:03 AM

The PSP sales boom in Japan continues relentlessly. The PSP even sold more units in one week than all the other consoles combined. Is this due to the recently released smash hit Monster Hunter (which we reported on), or because the Japanese simply have a liking for PSPs?

Regardless of the cause, our beloved console has continued to outsell the competition at an exponential rate. The numbers from the previous week look like this:

  • PSP: 120,964
  • DS Lite: 55,190
  • Wii : 44,618
  • PS3: 11,303
  • PS2: 10,423
  • Xbox 360: 1,452

That’s right PSP, yeah!

Monster Hunter 2nd G cannot be stopped

Posted on Apr 14, 2008 12:04:07 PM

One million units sold is quite a lot with a video game. Especially when these sales figures are only coming from one country. But for “Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G”, that is but one small benchmark.

The game hasn’t been available in Japan for more than three weeks and already it has surpassed the 1,500,000 units sold mark. These are numbers over which other titles can only dream.

This begs the question when the game will be released in Europe and America. But one can also have doubts whether the “Monster Hunter” will see the same success outside of Japan.
