Super Stardust Portable is an adaptation of the arcade shooter game released on PS3 earlier. On the PSP, this game provides players with a space ship dashing around five planets. You can protect your spaceship with the help three types of weapons. A bomb and a boost is also at your disposal to enable you to protect your delicate vessel from hooligans and space rocks.
Content in the PSP version of the game is similar to PS3. There are five planets, each one being a stage. Each planet throws at you a lot of enemies and asteroids and you have to fight them to cross five phases. The fifth phase sets you up in confrontation with the boss. There are different modes you can choose from including the Arcade and Planet mode. In the Planet mode, you can play just one planet while in the Arcade mode, you go through five planets automatically looped to the higher difficulty levels.
PSP features the analog nub which controls movement of map, the face buttons with which you can choose and the right and left triggers which are for activating and boosting bombs. D Pad up and down controls are used for handling weapons like Ice Splitter, Gold Melter and Rock Crusher.
Super Stardust Portable is a quite smooth flowing. An interesting addition is the Impact mode. Here you substitute shooting with boosting through planets. Your speed picks up as you go around boosting through more things.
All this is fine for those who are playing Super Stardust for the first time. For those who are experienced playing this game on the Sony PlayStation 3, the portable version is bound to be a disappointment. Precise and well designed controls in the original version feels much better than the difficulty faced on the portable moving around the analog nub. Shooting with the face buttons is also not as smooth and precise as the player would like it to be.
Another disadvantageous difference from the original version is the gameplay technique where you could move as well as change weapons simultaneously. Doing that is pretty difficult and awkward here. On the whole, this arcade game is enjoyable for those playing Super Stardust for the first time.

One of the most enjoyable games that recently released for the PSP is the Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow. Sony Bend, the creators of this game, gained prominence by its release. This project exhibited their levels of perfection in every aspect. A well maintained story coupled with excellent controls and voice chat made Logan’s Shadow the leader of the year. The predecessor of Logan’s Shadow was the Dark Mirror, which was globally acclaimed for its excellent interaction.
Logan’s shadow is significantly different from Dark Mirror by its advanced features. The under water combat and the new combat tactics makes it stand out from the previous one. The multiplayer in Syphon Filter: Shadow has two game modes with new maps. Continued from the Dark Mirror, Logan’s Shadow spins around the character Gabe Logan. Gabe and his team of experts work on a mission to defeat a terrorist group that has got its hands on a decisive weapon. The complexity of the game increases when the three countries – U.S, Russia and China try to take over the weapon by sending their agents.
The story line of Logan’s Shadow has maintained the standard of the previous releases by the number of flashbacks, suspicious characters, twists and turns. The excitement of the story is boosted by when Gabe decides to avenge the death of his team member and also to clear the name of his partner Lian Xing. The actual game play is much similar to that of Dark Mirror. The well tuned directional buttons and the sensitive shooting actions add up to the overall performance of the game. The more number of new moves that are performed by Gabe leave the players in awe. The new protective suite and the new grenade avoidance system reduce the risk on Gabe’s life. This allows the players to concentrate on strategies more than collecting medical kits.
Some of the finest features of Logan’s shadow are the high definition graphics and super sharp sound effects. The music is incredibly capturing, by perfect modulations suiting to various situations. However, at very rare situations the music might go out of phase with the environment of the game. Leaving the minor concerns apart, the Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is a game worthwhile.

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike is not your typical gun trotting game that you usually associate with most of the SOCOM titles. Instead, you get to plan strategies and stealthily maneuver a team of four Navy SEALs through a set of complex levels, which are also surprisingly vast. It is interesting to note, however, that you don’t control the proceedings directly, and instead only issue abstract commands to shoot, snipe, move, and the like. This part of the game is left to the artificial intelligence unit of the game which carries out these commands with surprising efficiency.
The best part of the game is its finely paced campaign. The political narrative in stark contrast, however, is rather dull if not downright boring. You also have to do a lot of hiding and sneaking, as Socom Tactical Strike requires a good deal of stealth as well in addition to a plethora of strategy on your part. Being able to accomplish the mission objectives in a variety of ways adds to the game’s endearing worth, and replay value. You will not get bored quickly, as there are always new frontiers to be discovered and conquered. You can opt to either fight your way through one enemy at a time and using standard weapons; or climb on the balcony to assure yourself of a good vintage point for sniping.
After deciding on what strategy to finally adopt, you can move your team as a whole, or separate them into two squads of two SEALs each. You have an analog button along the way to assist you in maneuvering their movements, which is pretty smooth, though somewhat awkward for moving through corridors and tighter areas. Another problem that tends to irritate you is when turning corners, since you invariably are unaware of the dangers that lie ahead and also can’t tell if there is any cover to hide behind, in case of unexpected attacks. This part of the game is definitely its weak link, as you practically lead your squad blindly around the corner. This is an unfortunate flaw considering how good the rest of the stealth mechanism is.
The enemies you face are challenging enough and do have a good repertoire of moves and weapons at their disposal to keep you interested. Despite having the usual share of shortcomings, this SOCOM title is good enough to spend some enjoyable hours.

Metal Slug needs no introduction. Almost every video game enthusiast knows about this title from SNK. The company has released different versions of this arcade game and now for PSP enthusiasts it has clubbed the seven different versions into a single package known as Metal Slug Anthology.
The whole package gives you the opportunity to face die hard battles and crush a variety of opponents using a large number of weapons, tanks and grenades. Metal Slug is basically a 2D game which has animations similar to the legendary Contra. Metal Slug Anthology (PSP) has a goofy sense of humor, detailed graphics and lots of POWs which have to be rescued without any harm. Each version of Metal Slug is unique in terms of the bosses, background scenes, stages, sound effects and the bad guys. With each upgraded version you will find some new weapons and armor too.
This military shooter series is the quintessential arcade game. The only irritating thing is the extra loading long screens which tend to disrupt the game flow. This can cause a lot of hassles for the veterans but still the overall pace of the game is smooth. In fact if the SNK is offering seven great titles at the price of one, then these small issues can be ignored with ease. One major problem with most of the arcade games is that either the number of continues are limited, or they are unlimited, which then destroys the challenging flavor.
Metal Slug Anthology also offers a unique and special feature. You can always choose between the two modes, i.e. limited continues or unlimited continues. You can also save the game progress in the memory stick at any point of time. The Metal Slug Anthology contains Metal Slug 3, which is widely considered to be the best of all the Metal Slugs. It has been technically improved. The legends of the King Of Fighters, Ralf and Clark are available as playable characters in the 6th version. Lots of new and exciting Easter Eggs are available in this version. Any Metal Slug or arcade fan should not be without it.

Everyone who’s knows anything about the gaming world, knows how much influence Star Wars and its successors have had. Trying to count the number of Star Wars titles or offshoots on two hands would be impossible. Now the latest Star Wars title called Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron has made its way to the PSP and brings that same thrill, excitement, and action, Star Wars titles are known for.
This action and shooting oriented title will bring out the shooter in everyone. The game is actually a third person multiplayer shooter with an ad-hoc multiplayer mode that can include up to eight players at once; whereas, the multiplayer in the game’s predecessor was restricted to four players. Furthermore, the online mode actually allows for up to 16 players at once. Of course, the multiplayer mode also includes several different game types, including the popular “Conquest Mode”. For those who are new to the Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade, in this mode there are numerous capture points that are scattered across the map and two teams will go head to head to gain control of them. Each team begins with a certain number of tickets, and these tickets are removed from the team’s total as they die and respawn. There are two strategies for victory, either you bleed your enemy’s ticket down to zero, or capture all the control points.
There are other multiplayer modes as well, including classics like capture the flag, or assault mode, which sends you in the galaxy to destroy your enemy’s capital ship. On the standard difficulty level you can appoint or activate an auto pilot which undertakes the responsibility of targeting foe and sending the ship in the required direction; although, this is of course only for the single player part of the game.
The title’s sound and graphics are also of high quality. The game does an excellent job in combing shooter and Star Wars elements together, with a very engaging multiplayer mode, and is a veritable must for any fans of Star Wars or shooting games.

Maybe you have already heard about the super cool title known as Coded Arms for the PSP. The game follows a typical shooter format and is similar to many other titles. The first person shooter game comes loaded with action and excitement.
Your player is required to locate the enemies and shoot them while wandering through corridors, and rooms; all while simultaneously destroying the intelligent and competent robots. Coded Arms (PSP) also includes a multiplayer mode with many challenging maps. The title’s controls are also superb and fluid, where the analog stick is used for movement and the four buttons for viewing. Moreover, there are three additional buttons for executing other types of combos and special moves.
Unfortunately, the game could use more original content, as it gets rather stale after a short period of time. Aside from a handful of fresh level, most are rather repetitive. While playing you’ll come across around 30 shooting weapons and each is packed with a certain quality and is best used for certain conditions. Sometimes the enemy AI is so pitiful you will want to spare them simply out of sympathy. But visually the game is very impressive, and this cannot be denied. The gameplay remains pretty choppy, and it is really only recommendable for dedicated shooter fans; otherwise, steer clear.

D-Day is the latest installment in the Brothers in Arms series. The game successfully manages to carry forward all the emotions and action that made the prequels famous and the franchise a big hit.
The game starts off with the gamers controlling Matt Baker and his compatriot Joe Hartsock, along with their “brothers in arms” troupe, and passing through the French countryside. The missions in Brothers in Arms - D-Day (PSP) feature slight differences compared to earlier released editions and have been made a bit tougher. Meanwhile the level length has remained around the same, and a check point system has been included in the game so that if the gamer dies in between any of the stages, he need not start all over again.
The game has to be played as a squad based first person shooter. This means that while controlling the main soldier, you will also be expected to lead other people. The face buttons are supposed to be used in the default scheme for giving orders, for raising the weapons and for tossing grenades. The gamer can easily look in all directions especially right and left, courtesy of the intuitive interface. At times it does become tough for the gamer to handle the controls when he/she has to give orders to the soldiers to sit down and relax. You need to work a great deal as the down button has to pushed first, then the target has to be moved and finally the button has to be released so that the orders can be passed on.
The movements have to be kept very fast in order to counter the moves of the enemies. The gameplay has been designed to emulate a typical battle zone where soldiers continually battle each other and gunfire prevails. Once the gamer gets familiar with the controls, then it becomes very easy to play. The weapons used in the game sound pretty convincing and the game’s audio theme is also interesting.
If there are gamers out there who love war themed first person shooters with a strategic element, then this is the game for them.

Each and every individual gamer must have at least heard of the Call of Duty series. Call of Duty: Roads to Victory is a mind blowing title with outstanding graphics and addicting gameplay. And now every gamer (hardcore or amateur) who owns a PSP (Play Station Portable) has a golden chance to enjoy this legendary war oriented game with a PSP version.
Now let’s get delve into the details of this awesome PSP title. The title incorporates a course of 14 levels in which the player will lead American, Canadian and British troops into the battle. Before you come across a country’s campaign, you have to watch a descriptive black and white newsreel clip. In Call of Duty - Roads to Victory (PSP), there are four distinct control schemes available, but the default one works very well and efficiently. A player can move with the analog stick, see & aim by facing the button, raise the weapon with the left shoulder button and shoot with the right shoulder button. One can lock onto enemies by looking in the general vicinity of an enemy but it doesn’t always work. In some situations you have to target an enemy from up close, as some weapons contain a very short lock range. In the game whenever you kill a soldier another will spawn and take his position. A gamer can easily predict the forthcoming situation and the levels if he/she has played the previous parts.
The graphics are cool and quite realistic, with situations like explosions, gunfire, smoke or attacking soldiers always appearing superb. So overall the title is very interesting, and if you are a Call of Duty fan then you can’t go wrong with this game.
