Shrek Smash n Crash Racing

Posted on Dec 15, 2008 06:43:23 PM

Shrek is all set to take the kid’s world by storm, yet again. As usual, a barrage of games descends on children following the stupendous success of the movie. Shrek games, as we have seen, have dominated the world of games for years, with over fifteen games on a multitude of platforms.

Activision continues to satisfy hungry consumers by cranking out the hugely popular game. Kart racing and Shrek, a combination that is sure to set our blood roaring is on the way. Fun, thrill and entertainment all the way is what is Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing is all about.

A fat ogre Shrek, his pet friend donkey Eddie Murphy and of course the musketeer cat who is absolutely adorable form a team to provide gamers hours of enjoyment. This game has been designed by Activision in such a way that it is half arcade racer and half party game, similar in features to the Mario Kart clone, going back to the GBA roots.

As a player, you are given the option of selecting Shrek characters. Cast is usual of course and with the inspiration of the movie around you, you can hit locations numbering up to twelve to race around in style. The hazards in Shrek Smash’n'Crash Racing come in the form of encounters with inhabitants, with the scenario bordering on the fairy tale. As you win over them, you collect modifiers and other items used for defense or offense. You can use the speed boosts to race ahead in this tried and tested generic method.

Interestingly, characters are used for riding using animals from Dreamworks universe. This is way better than just shoving them into a go kart and watching a drab race. For example, it is fun watching a dragon being ridden by a Donkey or a bull being ridden by Puss n’ Boots.

Solid design and gameplay takes this game a step ahead of its earlier counterparts. Tracks numbered twelve are exciting, each from a different fairy land with their own hooks in the race. Levels also feature exciting multiple routes.

Disadvantages include the slow loading times and speed. However, the other exciting features far over ride the sense of disappointment making this one of the most sensational and exciting game on PSP yet.

I’m an Ogre! Play as Shrek the Third

Posted on Sep 26, 2008 01:33:37 PM

No one can forget Shrek, yes that green coloured creature with ball like eyes and pipe like ears. Shrek is so popular he has also made his way to the PSP in a game titled Shrek the Third. Does this movie turned game suffer the same pitfall as most movies turned games, that is to say, does it suck? Fortunately the game manages to be semi interesting and any Shrek fans can continue reading.

The story and plot follow the same path as the movie, and the gameplay includes plenty of button mashing combat action, item collection, light puzzle solving and a little bit of light platforming. While playing, the game takes you to conventional fairytale locations where you must face off as Shrek against witches, pirates, enchanted trees, gargoyles, and numerous generic fantasy based thugs.

Of course, if Shrek is too ugly for you, you can also opt to play as Donkey, Puss in Boots, Fiona, Arthur and even Sleeping beauty. You will get the option to play as each one of these characters at certain points in Shrek the Third. Each character has strengths and weaknesses. In the game your three part special attack meter will refilled with the dust thrown by fallen enemies. One section of your meter will drain each time you utilise your character’s special attack. When all three sections of your meter are filled you gain the full ogre power. But this power meter is only available when playing as an ogre, which in this case is as either Shrek or Fiona.

The game’s more involved puzzles will require you to have basic pattern recognition skills. A more intense part of the game is undoubtedly the platforming sequence. Finally, there is an exciting castle smashing sequence, where you get the opportunity to use two different weapons. The graphics and sound are appealing, but nothing spectacular. If you were a fan of all three of the Shrek movies, and especially the third, then you shouldn’t miss this PSP game.
