SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1 is the next compilation title from SNK. They seem to be throwing out a lot of compilations off late, bringing old arcade gaming classics to modern gamers worldwide.
Sixteen of the old SKN arcade favorites are compiled into a single UMD for use on the PlayStation Portable. With sixteen games on a single UMD, you’re basically only paying a little less than two dollars for a great old time arcade game.
A simple menu, somewhat retro based helps you choose which game you’re going to play from an alphabetically organized menu, and gives you some more basic information on the title such as genre, year of release, number of players, etc.
For those who want specific details, the game list includes Shock Troopers, World Heroes, King of fighters ’94, Last Resort, Sengoku, Baseball Stars 2, Art of Fighting, King of Monsters, Top Hunter, Fatal Fury, Burning Fight, Neo Turf Masters, Super Sidekicks 3, Metal Slug, Samurai Showdown and Magician Lord.
Another added ‘attraction’ is the addition of goals to complete for each game. Goals can be accomplished through straightforward tasks such as completing a game on a certain difficulty level, and completing goals can unlock a wide range of goodies, such as artwork for other games in the collection, or unlocking move lists for fighting games.
Multiplayer over a wireless connection is quite fun to play, as almost all titles connect seamlessly over a wireless connection to other PSPs, although the Two player mode for these classics were a smoother version than the multiplayer mode, and probably a better choice.
Single player game play is unbeatable, and it lets you enjoy every bit of the old arcade experience right at your fingertips. Games like Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters, Last Resort and Top Hunter provide an exceedingly simple yet amazingly entertaining game play experience, provided you enjoy playing old time classic arcade games.
One of the best features of the title is the diversity of games. It has at least one of each great genre, such as fighting, sports, side-scrollers, and what not. SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 PSP is a must have for those who missed out on the Neo Geo era of gaming, and all the classic arcade games that came with it.

King of Fighters, better known as KOF to most, is a one-on-one style fighting series of games published by SNK Playmore. The series originally started on SNK’s own platform, the SNK Neo Geo MVS arcade machine, and was continued exclusively on this platform until 2004, at which point SNK stopped using the MVS and substituted it with the Atomiswave arcade board. This was accompanied with the release of King of Fighters XII, and moved the KOF series to the Taito Type X2.
The Latest installment in the series, King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga has made its way to Sony’s Playstation Portable as well. It is a collection of a few of the older KOF games, ported as a collection to the PSP.
The Plot in the KOF series revolves mainly around the character Kyo Kusanagi, a pyrokenitic and heir to the ancient Kusanagi Clan. Kyo and his best friends, Benimaru and Goro represent Japan. Many of these classic characters can also be played in a compilation of SNK’s fighting titles, called SNK arcade Classics Vol. 1. In King of Fighters, however, the fighters Kyo and his friends move them through the series, fighting villains such as Rugal Bernstein and the power of Orochi. Kyo also faces some stiff hatred from Iori Yagami, who is hell bent on destroying Kyo and his clan as revenge for his own clan.
Later, Kyo and Iori are forced to join forces with Chizuru, the host of the 1996 tournament and heir of the Yata clan, to seal away Orochi as their clans had done before. In the process of sealing away Orochi, Kyo and Iori disappear.
The next arc involved a syndicate known as the NESTS cartel, which organizes the tournament in order to obtain the fighter’s energy and collect data for their ultimate weapon. It is also revealed that they kidnap Kyo after his Orochi battle, so his DNA can be used to create clones for their use. After a betrayal from within the organization, the second part of the NESTS arc revolves around K fighting the organization with other characters such as Maxima and Whip.
The latest arc involves a strange fighter called Ash Crimson, supposedly the hero of this arc. The series has created a revolution among the fans of 1-on-1 fighters, and is still going strong.

Metal Slug needs no introduction. Almost every video game enthusiast knows about this title from SNK. The company has released different versions of this arcade game and now for PSP enthusiasts it has clubbed the seven different versions into a single package known as Metal Slug Anthology.
The whole package gives you the opportunity to face die hard battles and crush a variety of opponents using a large number of weapons, tanks and grenades. Metal Slug is basically a 2D game which has animations similar to the legendary Contra. Metal Slug Anthology (PSP) has a goofy sense of humor, detailed graphics and lots of POWs which have to be rescued without any harm. Each version of Metal Slug is unique in terms of the bosses, background scenes, stages, sound effects and the bad guys. With each upgraded version you will find some new weapons and armor too.
This military shooter series is the quintessential arcade game. The only irritating thing is the extra loading long screens which tend to disrupt the game flow. This can cause a lot of hassles for the veterans but still the overall pace of the game is smooth. In fact if the SNK is offering seven great titles at the price of one, then these small issues can be ignored with ease. One major problem with most of the arcade games is that either the number of continues are limited, or they are unlimited, which then destroys the challenging flavor.
Metal Slug Anthology also offers a unique and special feature. You can always choose between the two modes, i.e. limited continues or unlimited continues. You can also save the game progress in the memory stick at any point of time. The Metal Slug Anthology contains Metal Slug 3, which is widely considered to be the best of all the Metal Slugs. It has been technically improved. The legends of the King Of Fighters, Ralf and Clark are available as playable characters in the 6th version. Lots of new and exciting Easter Eggs are available in this version. Any Metal Slug or arcade fan should not be without it.
