Star Wars: Lethal Alliance – the Somewhat Generic Game still shines at Points

Posted on Dec 17, 2008 10:49:43 AM

For all the Star Wars fans, Lethal Alliance is a treat. With exhilarating and challenging on-rails levels, diverse and fun elements which are co-operative and fluid acrobatics, this game provides for action that is unmatched.

An extremely enjoyable addition to the range of star war games, Lethal Alliance resembles Prince of Persia in its acrobatics and has a strong shooting gameplay. Generic level designs and certain other flaws are overshadowed by the range of variety integrated in Star Wars - Lethal Alliance. Even though it is quite tough to get past the targeting system, the shooter is accessible enough to be appreciated by the ardent fans of Star wars. Characterization and diverse action adequately compensate for any drawback.

There are a host of Star Wars character cameos and the action is set between Episodes III and IV. The main character Twi’Lek Rianna Saren is not a Jedi but an original character. In the form of a mercenary, she assists the rebellion. The game of Lethal Alliance is driven more by character than based on any solid story line.

Action revolves around Riana and her companion Zeeo. This odd collaboration carries the story along in an interesting manner. In fact, it is this partnership that makes a difference in the otherwise dull game of third person shooting. Certain exciting collaborative moves are possible now with the help of Zeeo.

As a player, you can bash up the stormtroopers using Zeeo as a boomerang. You can send the lasers right back to your enemies with the help of Zeeo’s energy shield. You can even perform a cartwheel in slow motion by grabbing him. Other interesting things you can perform with Zeeo’s help include crawling into wall ducts, slicing into data ports, etc.

A cinematic touch is provided in combats where you enter the bullet time automatically with certain skills. Though occasionally frustrating, the moves are fluid and highly satisfying. Rianna moves around by somersaulting, tumbling and leaping from one point of anchor to another.

You can enjoy some exhilarating and exciting moments with Zeeo as he zips around taking control of turrets. Star Wars Lethal Alliance is enjoyment and fun all the way on your favorite PSP.

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

Posted on Nov 28, 2008 02:27:16 PM

I’m sure most of us enjoyed the Star Wars series of games for the consoles. There were many, and they were good. Well, now that series has expanded a little bit, and in an awesome way too. In September 2006, the PlayStation Portable saw the release of the second installment in the LEGO Star Wars series, the LEGO Star Wars II: The original Trilogy.

As the name suggests, the game follows the story of the original trilogy, except everyone is downsized to LEGO mode. It’s an awfully cute game, and a must have for all Star- Wars fans. Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy has improved on its predecessor, The empire strikes back, in almost all ways to deliver one of the most remember able experiences ever on the PlayStation Portable and the Star Wars series.

From music to stage design to visual presentation and jokes, almost all aspects of the game are improved in the sequel. There are even a few added extras to make the game better and some mini games too.

The controls are similar to all other action games, with actions for jumping, attacking and the likes. Attacks include gunshots or light saber slices, which get you through most enemies, and some bosses, which is quite similar or other action games. But, that’s about it. That’s where the similarities end.

In LEGO Star Wars II, you’ll be able to control a minimum of two characters at a time, that number extending up to six. You can quickly switch between being a Jedi, a droid, a rebel or any other creature from the star wars universe.

There are tons of puzzles mixed up with battles, which makes the game excessively fun to play, giving you the ability to sometimes build walkers, or make your own flight of steps and use them. Multiplayer hasn’t been left out either. The previous experience has been tweaked for better use of the ‘drop-in drop-out’ co-op play. The character creation is beautiful, with many features to choose from. Playing with vehicles is more fun, as you can roam around in them, instead of the previous on-rail system.

For those who want to relive the trilogy, or for the star wars newbie, this game is awesome in terms of story and gameplay alike.

Star Wars the Force Unleashed on the PSP

Posted on Oct 28, 2008 05:33:12 PM

Handheld console gamers have been left waiting for a long, long time, for a good star wars action game to hit the shelves. LucasArts has pretty much answered that call with the release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. This is one of those few games, not hyped up just because of the name and license, but also for the gameplay and graphics. Cool words like Digital Molecular Matter and Naturalmotion’s Euphoria Engine tend to make us curious.

Those may be just for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, but it still hypes up the title on the less capable consoles. And it certainly does live up to that hype. It gives the player immense control over the force, with access to powers like never before. The Star Wars: The Force Unleashed PSP version, interestingly, follows the same storyline of the Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts, and Krome Studios developed it for the PSP, Wii and PS2, with LucasArts overseeing the production.

The events of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed take place between episode III and IV, or between the old and new trilogies to be more precise. It does an awesome job of bridging the gap in the story line.

Tons of new techniques, like the Force Push, Lightning, Force Grip and the good old Force Repulse can be use to throw off and attack enemies. A whole bunch of new combos can be unlocked as well, by using a combination of these Force techniques. One good point of the game is that Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, the main character of the game, is already quite powerful when you start off with him. The environment is extremely friendly, with tons of useable objects, such as boxes and explosives that you can use against your enemies, and sometimes, you can use your enemies themselves. The auto aim system targets whatever is right in front of you.

The most fun part of the game is how you can use the force powers and combine them to make cool attacks. Oddly enough, the most fun enemies are the most commonly available ones as well – The storm troopers. Using your powers on them is just amazingly fun.

There is a ton to discover, and it’s all so much fun to experiment with your powers in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Play Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron

Posted on Sep 10, 2008 09:35:58 AM

Everyone who’s knows anything about the gaming world, knows how much influence Star Wars and its successors have had. Trying to count the number of Star Wars titles or offshoots on two hands would be impossible. Now the latest Star Wars title called Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron has made its way to the PSP and brings that same thrill, excitement, and action, Star Wars titles are known for.

This action and shooting oriented title will bring out the shooter in everyone. The game is actually a third person multiplayer shooter with an ad-hoc multiplayer mode that can include up to eight players at once; whereas, the multiplayer in the game’s predecessor was restricted to four players. Furthermore, the online mode actually allows for up to 16 players at once. Of course, the multiplayer mode also includes several different game types, including the popular “Conquest Mode”. For those who are new to the Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade, in this mode there are numerous capture points that are scattered across the map and two teams will go head to head to gain control of them. Each team begins with a certain number of tickets, and these tickets are removed from the team’s total as they die and respawn. There are two strategies for victory, either you bleed your enemy’s ticket down to zero, or capture all the control points.

There are other multiplayer modes as well, including classics like capture the flag, or assault mode, which sends you in the galaxy to destroy your enemy’s capital ship. On the standard difficulty level you can appoint or activate an auto pilot which undertakes the responsibility of targeting foe and sending the ship in the required direction; although, this is of course only for the single player part of the game.

The title’s sound and graphics are also of high quality. The game does an excellent job in combing shooter and Star Wars elements together, with a very engaging multiplayer mode, and is a veritable must for any fans of Star Wars or shooting games.

Take out the Light Saber: Star Wars is back

Posted on Jul 14, 2008 09:46:56 AM

Based on the famous motion-picture, Star Wars, the George Lucas owned LucasArts have come out with a game called ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’, in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics, Del Ray Books, Lego and Hasbro. The game has been specially developed for the PlayStation Portable and is expected to hit the stores somewhere in the month of September.

The game is based around the “Ronin” game engine, Lucas’ personal favorite, but also succeeds in including third party technology services like the “Digital Molecular Matter” from Pinelux Entertainment, used for the dynamically destructible objects and “Havoc”, used for the rigid body physics. To depict the game in a cinematic manner, the developers have used the equipment to capture facial expressions and motion. The game’s soundtrack is very catchy and has special inputs from John Williams.

The PSP enjoys an advantage that its rivals do not and that is the presence of a “historic mode” that enables the players to reenact five battles from the movie. Moreover, the multiplayer mode allows for up to four players at once. The promoters have claimed that the Star Wars galaxy will give the gamers the chance to discover more revelations about their world. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (PSP) features the player in the role of Darth Vader’s mysterious Sith apprentice “Starkiller”. The “rebel alliance”, responsible for the annihilation of the Sith in the movie, will be there, as will Princess Leia, with both playing an integral part in the story.

During Level 1, the player has the chance to control Darth Vader in fulfilling his quest to find a suitable apprentice in the form of Starkiller. The way the player handles Starkiller throughout the game will play a huge role in determining the output of the game which has been designed in different ways keeping in mind all possible outcomes. So it looks like a surefire hit not just for Star Wars fans, but for all PSP owners.
