Super Monkey Ball Adventure: Unique and Bizarre

Posted on Sep 30, 2008 03:28:18 PM

The title already has the tag of being unique and bizarre. While playing Super Monkey Ball Adventure you can draw flimsy comparisons to Marble Madness. Sega surely deserves applause for creating this unconventional harrowing 3D puzzle solving action title. PSP owners can be glad this fascinating title is making an appearance on our cherished handheld console.

The game’s concept revolves around AIAI, MeeMee, GonGon and Baby who complete the super monkey ball team. In the five kingdoms of Monearth there’s an enigmatic sadness on the loose, so these Super Monkey Ball teams are called into investigate. The narrative has a light and breezy tone, which goes along well with the spirit of the series.

Super Monkey Ball Adventure provides you a series on independent puzzles, where the challenge is to roll your cute monkey in their cute little gerbil ball all the way to the finish line. The good thing about these puzzles is that they exist within the story line. Magical chants, such as a way to imbue your ball with magical powers, are also introduced throughout the game. Some of the chants are thoroughly enjoyable, such as the one that attaches a giant spring mounted boxing glove to your ball, or turns you invisible, or lets you increase the ball size at will, stick your ball to certain surfaces, or even teleport you to a new location. You’ll come across these elements in distinct courses of the game and they might play a big role in solving puzzles too.

The game also involves some clever and inspiring phases, like in the amusement park round you need to use sticky chants to roll your way along the pipes with the aim of reaching the top of a tower. Super Monkey Ball Adventure (PSP) does have some annoyances, like you can only take one mission at a time and there is no retry chance if you fail. The title offers something both very different and very fun.
