Video Conferencing with the PSP

Posted on Jun 30, 2008 02:16:24 PM

The PSP is an excellent device for both gaming and communications because of its high quality screen and audio capabilities. Owners of the portable handheld are now blessed with an application that allows for video calling, also known as video conferencing, on the device.

The all-new application allows the PSP to make voice and a video calls over a wireless Internet connection. BT has developed the software and it will allow PSP users to call PCs, landlines and recycled mobile phones. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has collaborated with BT (British Telecommunications) to integrate broadband calling and video conferencing. It will use the recently released Go Cam and microphone to call other PSP users and other BT phones. It will utilize BT hot spots or your home’s broadband connection.

Initially, the service will only be available in the UK and it will work at home or in Wi-Fi spots. It brings the functionality of VOIP (voice over internet protocol) to your PSP, but adds the extra video element. Many landline phones incorporate VoIP technology, including the Philips VoIP841 and the U.S. Robotics USR809602, as the communication medium continues to gain prominence. VOIP is a method that enables voice conversations over the internet and has been especially popularized with the service known as Skype.

According to BT, this application will be provided to 100 other countries. This software is designed to compete with Nintendo’s application DSpeak that has similar features. These days technology is growing swiftly and this is one of the finest examples thereof. The new PSP service takes advantage of BT’s 21 Century Network (21CN), which is specifically designed to use Internet Protocol (IP) technology. The application will surely bring a revolution in PSP communications. The association of Sony with BT will definitely increase the amount of PSP users. It will benefit Sony as well as BT (British Telecommunications).

Slim cable for the PSP Slim & Lite!

Posted on Jun 25, 2008 01:33:56 PM

Wish your PSP had a bigger screen? Wish no longer as you can now experience Sony PSP fun on your Television. The “fun” is the games, videos, music and photos from your PSP that can now also be enjoyed on your T.V. You all must be wondering how? The answer is using the PSP Slim & Lite Component AV Cable.

This slim cable enables AV output via Component and has five connectors, which can plug in to five sockets. The cable length is 2.5m. Its Aluminum alloy housing cuts out any unwanted RF signals. This slim cable is suitable only for the new slim series. It allows you to display videos, photos, play MP3s, as well as play games. For playing games, a T.V with progressive scan support is required.

One of the best additions to PSP Slim and Lite is the video out function. When PSP Slim and Lite was introduced in the market these cables were not easily available, as some stores didn’t receive any in stock. The quality of the Sony PSP AV Cable is decent. The video-out feature has been a complaint among the PSP slim users. In order to play games on T.V, it should be uploaded with a progressive scanner. If it’s not present, then you can only watch videos and listen to music on it. Once you have selected the PSP’s output setting, the image displayed on the T.V does not fill it completely but is bigger than we expected.

PSP Slim and Lite Component cable works pretty well for an aftermarket product. The colors and images could use better quality. It is reasonably priced. Along with the cable you get a video showing the XCM 1080p VGA Box which allows you to hook up the PSP Slim component cable and also be a able to play it on VGA monitor.

The Good and the Bad: PSP

Posted on Jun 20, 2008 01:25:17 PM

With all the hype and popularity surrounding the Sony PSP, it has become latest news in the gaming industry. This handheld gaming console is a favorite among many popular personalities and is always a hit for the kids. It has been given the title of king of the hill by many of its fans. It has brought forward a new way to play games and watch movies and listen to some hard rocking music. It serves all purposes and solves most problems. Of all its huge success let us look at some of its pros and cons.

Pros

It is a sleek portable gaming system highlighted by an impressive wide-screen display and PS2-like graphics. It also boasts built-in WIFI, a web browser, the ability to play music and videos, as well as store images with the media manager. It comes in vibrant colors with a super fine metallic finish.

Cons

The Sony PSP multimedia functionality is underwhelming, especially for video, requiring an expensive memory card. The load times on the UMD (Universal Media Disc) games can be excessive. Ergonomically the device is OK but not great; as with most handheld gaming device, you’ll have to do a little finger stretching every 15 minutes or so to keep from cramping up. The problem with video playback is that you can only watch UMD videos on the PSP.

The bottom line is that Sony PSP elevates portable gaming to the next level, but its multimedia functionality falls short of its full potential. Thus, it will remain a number one in the gaming industry. It has left behind all the Nintendo DS Lite and DS competition. Sony PSP is a mixture of style, elegance and serves an ultimate gaming experience. It offers sophisticated graphically intensive games which will surely take your breath away!

Playing Lair On PSP – Streaming the Game in

Posted on May 5, 2008 12:08:14 PM

From the PS3 to PSP, you can play Lair on PSP and you’d then be the savvy, centre of all attention – the cynosure of all eyes at your work place. Thanks to the Remote Play functionality on the PSP, it is now possible to dock your PS3 and let the game stream on to your PSP.

A little excerpt from the Playstatic site goes like this:

“Previously you could only use the Remote Play feature for watching videos, playing music and browsing through your pictures, but now Lair is the first game that allows you to stream its content to the PSP. According to people on the Playstation forum, it’s working pretty well, although it really depends on your connection. Since the Playstation 3 only compresses the video output and sends it over to your PSP, you’ll see better results with a better connection. Of course, this also works with local remote play on your home network, which usually has much more bandwidth available.
If you want to try this yourself, simply set up your PS3 for remote use with your PSP and then fire up remote play on both sides. After selecting the Blu-ray disc on your PSP, you’ll get disconnected at first, but when you reconnect, Lair is booted up and you’re ready to play. It has to be noted though that since the PSP controller doesn’t have L2, R2 or two analog sticks, you might experience some inconveniences.”

We could think of everything when it comes to the PSP but we somehow missed the fact that we could have streaming games on. Think about it — if this becomes a possibility a few of those hugely popular games on the Playstation series, you could be able to play all of them too. Apart from the mind-boggling range of games for the PSP alone.

Go View Your Content On Your PSP – Like some Videos on Your PSP?

Posted on May 5, 2008 10:49:06 AM

When you just thought that the Sony Playstation Portable couldn’t do much more than what it can already do, we will have yet another surprise coming up. The PSP now gets a new feature to boast of. Sony has reported officially the launch of Go! View – a video download service for the PSP will be available for access all over Europe this summer.

In partnership with Sky (a satellite Broadcaster), will allow for a subscription based or a pay-per view type of access to videos to be made available as direct downloads.

Users can register for more information now on the Go! View website, and when the service launches will be able to download content to the PSP via an internet-connected PC. They will be able to choose the content they would like and then even have them sorted out on the web itself at the User’s Account section. When needed, however, the user can download the content on the PSP.

Alison Turner, MD of Go!View, stated her belief that “Go!View is a perfect marriage of great content and leading on-demand technology from Sky and the best portable device to watch it on from PlayStation.”
More services and products are expected from Go View and some of the expected ones are like to be a video messaging service and a GPS navigation software platform for the PSP. Not that we didn’t have some of them from our beloved Homebrews but they are just that – enviable hacks with security issues. It is something else when your favorite software comes from some respectable names.

With releases like these it appears that the PSP has an insatiable appetite to eat more and more developments and we are only beginning to wonder as to what else this machine is capable of doing.
