Video Conferencing with the PSP

Posted on Jun 30, 2008 02:16:24 PM

The PSP is an excellent device for both gaming and communications because of its high quality screen and audio capabilities. Owners of the portable handheld are now blessed with an application that allows for video calling, also known as video conferencing, on the device.

The all-new application allows the PSP to make voice and a video calls over a wireless Internet connection. BT has developed the software and it will allow PSP users to call PCs, landlines and recycled mobile phones. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has collaborated with BT (British Telecommunications) to integrate broadband calling and video conferencing. It will use the recently released Go Cam and microphone to call other PSP users and other BT phones. It will utilize BT hot spots or your home’s broadband connection.

Initially, the service will only be available in the UK and it will work at home or in Wi-Fi spots. It brings the functionality of VOIP (voice over internet protocol) to your PSP, but adds the extra video element. Many landline phones incorporate VoIP technology, including the Philips VoIP841 and the U.S. Robotics USR809602, as the communication medium continues to gain prominence. VOIP is a method that enables voice conversations over the internet and has been especially popularized with the service known as Skype.

According to BT, this application will be provided to 100 other countries. This software is designed to compete with Nintendo’s application DSpeak that has similar features. These days technology is growing swiftly and this is one of the finest examples thereof. The new PSP service takes advantage of BT’s 21 Century Network (21CN), which is specifically designed to use Internet Protocol (IP) technology. The application will surely bring a revolution in PSP communications. The association of Sony with BT will definitely increase the amount of PSP users. It will benefit Sony as well as BT (British Telecommunications).

Take your PSP to the end of the world and talk through skype — will it work?

Posted on May 13, 2008 05:53:39 PM

Skype has embarked on a rather daring adventure to prove that its services can really be used from anywhere in the world and a brave Australian writer named Rebecca Campbell has taken up the challenge by setting out on a 33 -day world-wide trip covering Italy, US, Estonia, China, Australia and about 15 more countries — whoa, that’s like going global with some guts.

Here’s what ITwire had to say on this:

“….As with any “reality” type event, which this seems to qualify as, not that Skype is specifically promoting it as such, there is “a twist”. Campbell “must remain in ‘perpetual motion’ for her entire journey – always moving, even when she’s sleeping”. It even means she needs to be moving when eating – one meal in Singapore will take place in a revolving restaurant!…”

And…

”….The “reality” aspect comes in with “The Nomad” needing to share her trip live on the Internet as she travels, sayeth the Skypesters, and she’ll be fully kitted out with “a variety of Skype-enabled gadgets”, including the 3 Skypephone, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet and presumably others as pointed out by Campbell on Skype’s ‘Mobile page…..”

So what has that got to do with Sony’s PSP, you might want to ask? Well, Sony’s PSP also has features that can help strap skype on. The VoIP service Skype is usable on the PSP with Sony’s new Skype Headsets, complete with a remote control and everything.

If the mission takes off and is indeed successful (We have a feeling it will be), Sony’s PSP, among many other devices, is going to be a truly nifty device and perhaps it will be all you will ever need to survive (at least entertainment and communication wise). Imagine being able to use your PSP to communicate with anyone in the world for free or at a very nominal cost? We are already thinking of using my PSP not just to play or even to communicate — we are thinking of running some coaching classes while on the move (Ahem!).

Giving a device a fresh voice to so many internet enabled devices, with skype, is like humanity discovering that it can talk, for the first time — that rush is hard to match.
