Steel Horizon: Konami WWII for the PSP

Posted on Nov 17, 2008 12:16:46 PM

World War-2 served as the cornerstone for many innovative games over the past few decades. Steel Horizon is one of a kind, concentrated on naval strategies. The creators of Steel Horizon – Konami, came out with this bold release that featured real time battle sequences. However, the game did not swipe success due to few imperfections.

The players take the role of a young naval captain, who is bound by expectations and tasks. The captain has to his credit one of the most technically advanced vessel, which would help him devastate the antagonist. The player is provided with an option to choose between a battleship, a destroyer or a submarine. The choosing of the right ship to the occasion is important to raise the reputation of the captain. Steel Horizon comes to a closure when the captain’s ship is destroyed. However, the other ships in the fleet could not be upgraded at any point. This at times leaves them useless and archaic.

The options in the game allow the player to launch thirteen different kinds of ships and assist him in planning the strategies. However, these options also include hospital boats and cargo vessels that could not be employed for a combat. The inability to hide these utility ships blocks the view of the enemy ships from the player. The game can seem really slow for the players as the ships can move only few square meters per turn. When it comes to the battle, the game gets really difficult to handle. Especially while turning the ships to attack a target.

In accordance with the ship, the player gets to trigger special attacks like fire cannons, dive bombing fighter pilots to attack other fleet. The player is always left busy at micro-managing every aspect of the game. This refrains the player from planning strategies and applying tactics over the game. The 20 missions offered by Steel Horizon would leave the player on a run for conquer, but it is less likely that the graphics would hold his interest. Accomplishment of missions would however enable the player to unlock few hidden missions. On the whole, Steel Horizon is a good mixture of strategy and real time action made less enjoyable by imperfect features.

WWII: Battle over the Pacific — Why fly when you can do more with your PSP

Posted on May 16, 2008 06:02:13 AM

Man has always wanted to fly like a bird, but that is history. Now there are people who would want to not just fly, but also do sophisticated maneuvers and perform all kinds of stunts while up in the air.

Such is the way of life now. That’s the way things are with your PSP too.

The Latest release of WWII: Battle over the Pacific is a good case in point, having joined the ranks of all the famed releases on the PSP. Now, officially launched and already taken off for the battle, WWII is a game that keeps you high up in the air. The fighter sim soaks you in a mix of emotions and keeps you suspended high up in the air thanks to all that adrenaline pumping.

The game is on the PSP and that would mean you can literally play anywhere and then here’s the plot of the game as rendered by game.co.uk:

“… You are the only pilot who has what it takes to defeat the enemy forces. You will need your wits about you to gun down bomber and fighter planes. You will need accuracy and nerves of steel to fly into the flak from gunboats as you try and sink the enemy naval fleet. You will need sharp reactions and loads of luck as you dive bomb vehicle convoys of tanks, ground troops and take out the all important fuel tanks.
The risks are high but the glory even greater for those brave enough to take the P38 Lightning and F4U-4 Corsair into high speed dog fights before swooping in to bomb targets on land. The enemy planes are super quick and the pilots ruthless so don’t hang about admiring the scenery - get in there …”

A game that must hope to have your spirits soaring – this is a must buy for your PSP.
